    Calf Ran Off

I agree with you bigbull, it is just one of those things that happened. I am glad it all worked out and I hope the calf does OK.

Thanks for posting your baby pics. I also love to see all the babies. They look really nice. I like all the different colors and markings.

    Uterine Prolapse

first of all, vaginal and uterine prolapses are different and uterine are rare and much more serious. A uterine prolaspe is very stressful on the cow and even if you catch it early there are many things that can go wrong and some make it and some don't. I think a lot has to do with the cow and...

    Yearling heifer with distended abdomen

I am wondering if it is something we call water belly. We see it sometimes in feeder calves, or calves on cows. They get a huge belly, usually on one side and it is something they do recover from. They seem fine otherwise but we always have to cull them and sell.

    2 month old orphan calf

If you have some milk replacer powder, you might sprinkle some on their feed, we used to do that when we transitioned bottle calves from milk to grain, and it has nutrients he still needs at 2 months old. Good luck with him!

    Braunvieh babies!

There is some color variation, but the calf that is is the frosty steel/gray color will turn into the mousey brown traditional braunvieh with the white around the muzzle. If there is some black in the pedigree, they can be darker, lose the nose ring and be solid dark grey or chocolate. But they...

    Another prolapse question

I had a cow do this same thing for several years when it got close to calving. It was never a problem until she turned 9. She had a vaginal prolaspe in the fall and now has it held in place with a dart. She will go to town after raising this calf. Some will never get bad like ours did. I...

    A walk away mom

I would say if calf is active it has probably nursed. It can be hard to catch them doing that. I hope it all works out.

    Pregnant Heifers?

You can try and abort the calf with a shot of Lutelyse but it wont' work if the calf is more than 5 months along. It is not a sure guarantee even if less than 5 months. There are other things you can try also if you don't want her to carry the calf full term.

    Braunvieh babies!

Thought I would share a few pics of new calves born in the last few days....and a fullblood Braunvieh cow. She calved 2 days after pic was taken.

I don't know what she is thinking but I am thinking that is such a cute baby!! I love this time of year.

    Another heifer, opinions?

is she open or bred? If she is open, when do you plan on breeding her? My critique would be the feet, look like too long of toes and the pasterns look weak. It may just be the picture though.

same calf still subject of pneumonia

Sorry for the loss. It is too bad that we can do everything humanely possible but it still isn't enough. I hope you never have another experience like it.

    Older Bulls?

Why not? As long as he is sound, fertile and gets the job done. The longer you can use a bull, the more you got for your $$.

Starting off with a Bang (pics added)

Good day for you and your heifers. I hope they keep going that way. Always great to see a first calf heifer calve unassisted.

    water bag not breaking

Just to clarify....we don't live in a fescue area at all. We have had about 10 calves only one has had a water bag that did not break, due to the leg back. However, my thoughts were that anytime we don't see the calf sac breaking we should probably intervene and it sounds like that is the...

    she needs to hurry

Is she in labor or just looks like she could pop at any moment....but won't? I am thinking you mean she looks ready, ready, ready to calve but just hasn't yet. My experience with heifers is that this is very common. In our case, we have some heifers we have thought were going to calve for 2...

    water bag not breaking

Do you see this as a sign of a calving issue? We had a cow showing what looked like afterbirth after a while trying to calve. Head was back, calf dead, cow saved. Heard that afterbirth showing is a sign of head back. Last night had cow with waterbag out, never broke, never saw feet. After...

    Reasons Why

I enjoyed reading those. My father is what I call "old school" and would fall into several of those categories....I remember one year his ancient ice box refridgerator door didn't close and the vaccine all went to room temperature for several hours. It was over $1000 in vaccine. Could I convince...
