2 week old calf lethargic and weak

I try to do more reading than posting but I have been off line for a while and just too busy, What I have is a Angus/Maine bull calf. It was pulled out of a heifer about 84 LB but very vigorous at birth out of a maine (non show) heifer. She had a full up uterine prolapse that I called the vet to...

    Best used tractor

I have a JD 5425 I bought new in 2008. Bought it new becasue the used tractors were so darn expensive and knew if I did not roll it down the hill I could always get my $ back out of it. So it is an open cab with the cab floor (great!) front assist and beet juice in the tires, shuttle shift and...

    Cummins 6.7 mpg's

1700 RPM is the magic line for my '09 2500, Quad, 4x4, Auto, LB. Under it, you can get 19-20 empty/14-15 with the cattle trailer if you have a soft foot. If you want/need to run over 65mph it will drop 14 empty/11 full or lower. I had the same truck but an '05 w/5.9. Both bought new and while...

    20 month old bull

Is 1300lbs at 20 months an issue? What was his weaning weight and yearling weight?

Why did you choose your breed?

OK I did some reading...wow there is a lot of information some of it quite new. I stand better educated about the scur/horned genetic marker differences. The masking of scur expression and the prevalence in males over females as far as scurs goes started explaining things that I did not fully...

Why did you choose your breed?

Without DNA markers being checked you could get anything in the horn category. You would probably get various levels of scurs. If you know by DNA that your cows are HOMO Polled and you use a Horned Hereford bull then small little horns would be the norm. We have Maines and in our breed we can be...

    Cow in labor for days!

Someone once said the quickest way to have a calf is quit watching the cow. I don't mean to be rude when I say that but if you have had the vet out, which is the right thing to do, and the doc said there is not a problem then just keep an eye on her and let nature do its thing. One thing I would...

3 years in a row is starting to get old

I'm from SW MO originally. So when you talk about pastures down there I completely understand. I thought when I moved up here (2005) I would leave all those problems behind...

3 years in a row is starting to get old

Burlington, IA is 16 miles south of us and we made the US drought map summary http://droughtmonitor.unl.edu/for the wettest spring (+7.0") and the driest summer (-8.0" and counting) since 1898. What stated so well has now is ending in misery. This is Iowa for goodness sake. Corn too dry to...

    I am green with envy.

    $ 70.00 a roll.... wtf

Just got offered nothing special grass hay for $120 per ton...I said no thanks. The drought has set a new floor for prices. I think I might need 20-30 bales over what I can produce so this year I will be almost self-sufficient....god it feels good.

What's with all the calving issues this season?

I wonder the same thing. With the droughty grass and high inputs I wonder if some of us might have slacked off the mineral. We are getting less than optimal hay...ect. I have had only one mispresentation but I have been 7/7 heifers. I know of several guys with larger herds that are having some...

    Butt first feet down

Had this very thing happen last night. I heard the vet say breech as he went in. Calf is live but mom wants nothing to do with it. We are working on that now. Using the molassas on the calf trick to hopefully get her licking the calf. I had to give calf some colosturm replacer last night because...

    sheath design

As with most traits this is one score out of many. As I'm sure we're all aware, all animals have week and strong points but I think sheath design (unless grossly exaggerated) is one of the secondary bull selection traits. As far as one trait correlating to another….I think that is a misnomer...

Semen tank went dry but still cold is semen still good.

I would have to disagree about the shipper. I pour the liquid N2 out of the shipper tank into my tank before I send it back when I get semen sent. This has been my experance. I would go NUTS if I got a vapor only shipper tank.

    First time having cows ai'ed

We AI about 16-20 a year. I agree the timed AI will not always show the "i'm in heat" disposition. The vet can tell you what the cervix feels like. When we take notes by the shoot we write down how "ripe" the cow feels when the vet inserts the probe. We avg about 80-90%. But having said that...

    stay calm or worry

If I had to run my preg cows in the shoot everytime I have seen goo I would be replacing shoots every 4 or 5 years. IHO as the mucus plug breaks down you see this. I see this in almost all my cows. I have seen this up to 3-4 weeks from calving. NOW I will say cow disposition plays a strong part...

    Broadcasting turnips the rye grass

http://sphotos-a.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-a ... 5847_n.jpg I drilled winter rye and oats into my silage field. My turnips and radishes did not arrive until 2 days after the drill went into the field. There was rain on the way so I did not want to miss that and drilled without the brassicas. After...

    Cattle Trailer

Size matters.....we went from a 20/6.5 (steel Titan) to a 22/7.5 (EBY Wrangler) ...night and day .....we pull with an 09' Dodge 3/4 6.7 cummins...no issues at all. Good god it seems like we went from a 2 bedroom apartment to a 4 bedroom house.....if condition is simmilar go longer and wider....

    Planting in front of Isaac

We got 1.1" after I shut the tractor down. One side got winter rye (1.5 bu/ac), turnips and red clover (2lb/ac/ea) The other got 2bu/ac oats and the few lb left over of the trunip/clover mix. It came in an all day rain event, nice and easy. No mud at all it sucked up like a dry sponge. I got...
