    chopping corn stover

Has anyone ever tried to chop whats left after the combine harvests the grain? I was thinking that if the spreader was shut off and the combine made a windrow that a hayhead might be able to pick it up. Would the long stalks damage the pickup fingers on the head? I was just thinking it might be...

    pasture renting tips

I have heard through the grapevine that a landlord with some sizable acreage for this area might be willing to rent out his pasture. The acres are currently being cut for hay. The landlord has become dissatisfied with the current renter because of lack of replacing fertility and lime. The...

Hay Feeder Wagons: Pros and Cons

We have an H and S feeder wagon that we feed silage in. We have had it for probably 15 years. The first 5 years it was used every day in a backgrounding lot.We now just use it to feed our cows in the winter. It has been a very good well made feeder we have never done any work to it other than a...

    felton herefords

Has anyone used the bulls feltons oran433, mm felton 509 or progression? Ive got some hereford heifers to A.I. breed this fall. I'm looking for something with a lot of calving ease. I also want to use a bull that has a moderate to low frame score. I like cattle that can flesh up and slick off...

    wheat pastures

Are cattle out on wheat pasture this time of year? If so what has all the bad weather in Texas and Oklahoma done to gain and death loss? If not what time of year are they put in and when do they come off? Sorry if this question seems obvious to some of you living out there but I'm from the east...

    Belt feeder vs. Board/chain feeder

If you are even thinking about converting to a tractor/mixer setup I would recommend not buying any feeder and putting that money towards the conversion. Dad and I went through the same thing, we always talked about changing over to a mixer wagon but kept putting it off. We finally did and are...

    In-ground silo photos; suggestions needed!

if you could line the sides with the same plastic used to cover the top it probably wouldn't be necessary to concrete the sides.

    Belt feeder vs. Board/chain feeder

We had a 100' demuth feeder it was a nice unit. We never had any problems with it. We used it for about 5 years until we converted to feeding with a mixer wagon. If you can find a used harvestore model 500 they are better than the demuths.

    feeder cattle contracts

Has anyone on here ever contracted feeder cattle directly with a feedlot? I would like to expand our stocker/backgrounding operation but would like to find some ways to have some risk protection.

Igenity EPD's for the Commercial Cow operation

I used it on some bull calves that I was thinking about selling to a neighbor. After getting the results back I sold him the better bull and made the other one a steer. I didn't think $35 dollars each was to much money to find out all that information on my bulls. I added the $70 to the price I...

I know from past experience that two 17 year old boys trying to steal a sheep will be ran out of a pasture by a lama.

    renting pasture with no fence

Pasture rent in this area is around $35/acre. this is for fenced property that is ready to turn cattle out on. I though that if I offered $25/acre and provided some fencing this might not be too bad. I could get by with some electric fence but the property has some highway frontage that needs...

    renting pasture with no fence

I have the opportunity to rent some pasture. The only problem is that it needs a lot of fence work. The land owner does not have the money to make the necessary repairs. I was thinking about offering a long term rent contract at a price that I could afford to rebuild what is needed. The land...

Any fruits or veggies I shouldn't feed my cows?

My brother sells chemicals to some large vegetable possessors in central california. He said all their waste goes to cattle. He saw cattle being fed a loader bucket full of pepper waste into a hay ring so I would say peppers even in large amounts would be safe. I visited him this winter and...

    dairy replacements

I was referring to raising replacements for someone else on a custom basis. They would provide the heifers from their own herd to me and I would raise them to breeding age for a set fee.
