    Hay still in field

In my case, the custom hayer has the "I dont give a damn aditude on the I dont give a damn farm". Extremely frustrating for me! Trying to look at it from his point of view, he was planning on sub contracting it done however the sub contractors want a fortune to do it. He finally bit the bullet...

Im in Alberta. On June 20th we started haying the first cut. Have half of it baled before it rained but the other half is has been getting rained on for a week now. Have to get the alfalfa thats baled off the field because the alfalfa is really growing back already. Its already about 8" tall and...

Hands - What do you prefer

Its not just about the horse being in proportion to the rider. Its the way the horse is geared. Im no expert on heading or barrel horses but the top ones are bigger than say a cutting horse. Ive got TB crosses that will blow the doors off of your average QH. But even just for getting from point...

When is legume fixated nitrogen available?

I find this thread extremely interesting. All I can add is that I was told by a farmer friend that years ago it was common around here for people to grow a crop of clover and then to just plow the whole crop under for fertilizer.Course gas and diesel wasnt much of an issue years ago like today...

Will 12 acres of hay feed 11 cows for the winter?

When we had cows back in Nova Scotia we could run high cow per acre nimbers because we put the cattle in a barn in late fall and kept them there until late spring when the pasture dried up enough to turn them loose. We had 24 cows and a huge barn that we could keep them in(stanchions) and...

Hands - What do you prefer

Im 6 foot 4 and weigh220lbs. I feel silly sitting on a little 15HH horse. There are other reasons though for bigger horses. Depends on what your needs are. Anyway I like em over 16HH, take a size 0 shoe or bigger. Good whithers are really important to me too. The problem with a lot of QHs around...

Will 12 acres of hay feed 11 cows for the winter?

In my area of Alberta you can run about one cow on ten acres. Honestly you sound way overstocked. Have you thought about how your going to get those cows breed again? It wouldnt pay me to buy a bull for only 6 cows. Plus after they are breed what are you going to do with your bull? Your going to...

    Triticale

My one pasture I should do something with because the alfalfa stand is 10YO. Its doing suprisingly well this spring. Thinking about taking a hay crop off of it this summer. Because of fertilizer costs I was thinking about seeding to triticale late this summer. Thisway if its dry next year i will...

    fertilizer? reseeding?

I just bought the place. Have no target market really. Example hay market because we have no gear or farm know how and can make use of the hay. A rancher friend who like me is no farmer but he bought a bailer so he is going to bail the hay on a crop share with me. I ll use my hay for my horses...

    bread?

Was on an Elk hunt years back. Grass was hard to find. Had to call the hunt off because we couldnt find enough grass for the horses. The only place there was grass is where the elk where so if we camped there we would have chased the elk. Anyway we had apples with us. Tried mixing it with there...
