    Screw worms in FL

I got an email from TAHC today saying that New World screw worms had been found in Key Deer in a preserve in Florida, and to report to your vet or animal health officials if you find ANY evidence of a screw worm infestation. Thought it would be good to spread it around. "The Texas Animal...

    HSUS and the Checkoff

I wonder who the ranchers are that are siding with HSUS? http://beefmagazine.com/blog/hsus-targe ... take-stand

    This year's weaning data

Because everyone loves seeing numbers, I thought I'd share ours after weaning and preg checking all of our spring calving commercial cattle the last couple of days. 54 calves avgd 206 days old, 538#, and 2.62 WDA. 54 cows (including 11 first calf heifers) avgd 1086#, and 89% were bred in a...

    Super Cows

This is 752, one of our "super cows." Weighs about 1150 when she's fat, always breeds at the front of the season, is 10 and has never missed, and her calf always looks like this one. And we aren't weaning until the first part of September. Sure wish they could all be like her! Makes the case for...

    How many preg check?

Just out of curiosity, how many on here routinely preg check their cattle? And if you don't, why not? We do. Sometimes twice, if we're already running a later bred group through the chute for some reason. A lot of times we check AI's at 32-35 days, then check again when they're a couple...

    Ladies - AIing/Palpating

This is just out of curiosity, but what's the largest number of cows per day that you've heard of a woman doing, or that you do yourselves? Or what is the industry standard that we're supposed to be able to do?? I'll go ahead and say that I've palpated 100 one time, and I AI'd about 30 heifers...

    Trich Vaccine

We went to a cattle meeting a few weeks ago, and the BI vet had research showing that the trich vaccine makes a pretty sizable difference in the amount of damage done when a bull becomes infected with trich. Something along the lines of 60% of cows infected vs. 30%. I didn't hear it, but my...

    VFD

Nearly every beef and ag magazine is writing articles right now to precondition everyone to this new rule. The more I read about it, the bigger the knot in my stomach gets. As someone who feeds medicated feed, this thing is going to be a nightmare! Why the heck do we need something like this...

    Scours Vaccine?

I'm waiting to hear back from our vet, but I thought it might not hurt to see what everyone on here thinks, too. We had a headache with scours this past spring calving season. It was wet, and just about all of our pastures are clay, so it was not a very good calving situation. We had quite a...

    Branguscowgirl - Onstar pics

These are the two onstar bulls that made the cut. ET Onstar x Csonka/Sonar sibs. They get better every day. They were weaned about 75 days ago. This one is a little piecey, but he is super rugged. Group shot.

    Fall pictures

Just some random pictures from the last couple months. Hope y'all enjoy them! I am READY for cooler weather. Small framed cow that I've posted pictures of before with a huge calf. This is this year's calf. Different small framed cow, with her second calf. Both bred back (a huge feat this year...

    Branding

Any suggestions on what to put on a hot brand to help them heal better/faster? A friend of ours puts what I think is turpentine on his, but we've never used anything. Just wondering what everybody else does! Getting ready to brand a handful of bulls.

    Short Course

If anyone will be going to short course this year, we'll be there. We were asked to speak in two different sessions...I am both excited and terrified, and am getting heart palpitations just thinking about it. Two months away seemed a lot longer a month ago! :cry2:

    Vetericyn navel dip

We've never really been too concerned with treating navels, but definitely are after this year!! I bought a bottle of the Vetericyn Seven+, or whatever it is, and used it yesterday on some newborn Angus twins for the first time. It is WET where the calf is that we left with the cow, and...

    Share your spring rain pictures

I can't remember the last time we didn't have standing water in nearly all of our pastures......but I'm not complaining!! These were all taken in the last 2 months. None of them have water in these places normally, and most are "dry" (soggy) right now.

    Around the ranch today

We hated to do it, but decided to turn our pairs out in the big pasture before we worked them. With so much rain in the forecast and the pens already a mess, we'll just wait for it to dry up a bit. They didn't even stop for cubes after they went through the gate. We've waited on this one cow...

    Twins - make them stop!

Today, we had our fourth set of twins. With 32 cows calved out, we are halfway through. I sure hope that's it, but I'm not going to hold my breath. Some of those cows look pretty big. I asked my husband what we did differently last year, and he said, "we got rain." Gosh, I hope we...
