draggin pastures--who does it and with what?

This tire drag fits the Reese hitch on my truck or my 3ph adapter. The spreader bar is necessary to pull all 7 tires in this 3-1-3 setup but I can also pull just 3 tires without a spreader bar. Tires have the advantage of following uneven ground contours such as old terraces.

    Pasture Renovator

I have a Hay King and I've been disappointed in the long term results because I can't detect any. Literature backs that up with regard to aeration in general. My soil is sandy loam. Best use for it is to loosen the sod for overseeding ryegrass but it takes 15 hp per shank to pull it deep...

Planting Bermuda via Sprigging and with tops.

Tops are much easier to harvest than sprigs and they need more water to survive, but sprigs can be planted early in the season before tops even start growing. If you are planting in narrow rows 10 feet apart you won't get full coverage for at least 2 or 3 years. 5 feet would be much better...

Planted clippings for the first time

I agree 100% on the importance of packing. I pack it hard with tractor tires and anything else I can pull behind the tractor that makes more tire tracks.

Planted clippings for the first time

I tried sprigging the same ground with T85 twice before. First time it never rained, and second time was May 1 this year and it did rain but the sprigs died anyway. I didn't use 2, 4-d because I didn't decide to plant the clippings till early that morning, and it's been too wet since then to...

Planted clippings for the first time

How do you like the seeded varieties? I don't have much use for them. That's why I'm establishing T85. The stuff grows so fast and thick it's freakish.

Planted clippings for the first time

On July 4 I planted 8 acres of Tifton 85 clippings on a field that had been sprigged twice and failed. We've had a near monsoon lately and it had rained the night before. The field was wet and we made quite a few ruts but I was determined to get it done while the ground was wet. It rained...

    bahia grass

I have a few acres of Russell, but the cows don't seem to like it much for grazing. Makes a little more hay than Coastal but it bleaches out badly in the sun. I'm planting Tifton 85 for grazing, just planted 8 acres of T85 clippings last week since we're having a monsoon. Thinking about...

    When to aierate

I have made random passes across fields in the spring to test if I could see results compared to the rest of the field and I couldn't see any. I have also done entire fields with no noticeable results, except when I did it during dry weather I had dead grass streaks where the knives disturbed...

    When to aierate

Save yourself the time and fuel. I have a Hay King aerator and it doesn't make my pastures better. I only use it to prep pastures for fall overseeding by loosening up the sod so the winter ryegrass can grow better.

    Vinyl Fence - No?

I don't want any more of it. It's expensive, and mine is brittle and this is the result. And it's a big problem to get pieces and parts to fix it. This is what happened when a limb fell on it earlier this week. I secured the fence before taking the picture, but when it happened the limb...

    Pasture drag - homebrew ideas

This is how I do it. There is some expense for chains and the Reese hitch spreader bar but the old tires are free from the tire place. Use small rear tractor tires not big ones, because sometimes you have to flip them over on top of each other to get through gates and they get heavy when they...

    russell bermuda grass

I have some Russell and I wish it was Tift 85. They don't graze it as readily and it bleaches fast when curing. No trouble establishing the Russell though. Russell will outproduce Coastal by about 10% but the cows don't seem to like it as much. Going to stick with Tift 85 in the future...

    How's the weather treating you?

Started getting good rain almost a month ago and the Coastal hay took off like a rocket. Had been very hot and dry for a long time. Amazing how the grass can look so bad and then come alive like nobody's business when it rains good and the weather's hot. Hay fields got thick and rank in a...

Tree Roots at Edge of Hay Field

Not a chance! They have plenty more roots.

Tree Roots at Edge of Hay Field

A few weeks ago I used my subsoiler to cut the roots under these oak trees at the edge of one of my Coastal hay fields. I noticed today the grass is now greener on the field side since I cut the oak roots. Must be doing some good. The picture shows the subsoiler slit and the greener grass...

    cow pile spreading

This is how I do it. It has a spreader bar that connects to the Reese hitch on my truck. I try to drag just after a rain because it spreads best then but it sure makes a mess of my truck!

    clearing land

A track hoe with a thumb is your best bet. It can dig the stumps and then build high, mostly dirt-free piles and it can keep it stirred up and piled up as it burns. Don't even to try to burn it if it's still fresh and green because it's much harder to burn than if it's has time to dry...

    Question about barn floor

Been there done that. The best solution is to elevate the floor or lower the ground outside so water can't run in under the barn.

    Pros\cons clamp on hay spears

Try welding a socket on your bucket and inserting a spear like this: You can also adapt a Reese hitch with a spear which is probably even better. Note how I reinforced the top edge of my bucket with angle iron struts.
