    Burger Ques. # 2

If you are having a animal totally ground into hamburger, does the butcher hang it and age it like a carcass that is cut into steaks?

    Burger

I have a crippled poor doing yearling heifer that I thought I might just get grinded into hamburger. She has been on pasture since weaning many months ago. Question is, should the heifer be fed out with some high fat feed or corn or would that be a waste of money. She is only about 700 lbs...

    futures

The futures on feeders are getting whacked this morning. Not sure why. It hasn't seemed to effect the local prices yet but I am sure it will at some point. https://finviz.com/futures_charts.ashx?t=FC&p=d

    No wonder we have problems.

Screwing around today I saw a ad for Mexican Feathergrass. This is the same needle grass we talked about a few weeks back and the one that is giving me fits in my pastures. http://www.txsmartscape.com/plant-search/plant-details.php?id=986 So this very invasive plant is being sold all over...

Info some mind find useful on backgrounding

This is a topic that comes up occasionally on backgrounding calves. These are the results of 18 calves that were sold at the OKC stockyards on 6-20-22 I am not a large operator first of all and my calving period is not real tight plus I had a few calves weaned early for various reasons The...

    Herbicide 2022

Just a heads up. If you use herbicides, it might be a good idea to get them bought early this year. The supply chain issues are effecting the amount of product available and of course its going to be more expensive. The nice young lady at the co-op that knows her stuff sold me some Brash at...

    Pour on question

A question for you folks that use a pour on for fly or lice control. On light weight calves do you use a regular pour on type auto fill gun? My problem is that the regular gun dispenses such a large volume that it is hard to work with just the small amount of fluid that is requrired on a three...

    Why wean calves?

Because it costs you $50 to $75 per head at this time of the year if you don't. The sale report says $3.00 to $5.00 but it looks like around a dime a pound to me. With added shrink for unweaned calves, its probably closer to $100 per head loss. https://www.ams.usda.gov/mnreports/ams_1281.pdf

    Shredder question

When looking at a used shredder like a batwing, how do you tell if the gearboxes are okay? Can it be done if not hooked up to a tractor? Thanks

    Hard starting

Okay clear up my thinking here. Tractor is a Kubota M6800. I have owned it about 8 years. Its been a good machine but has slowly gotten harder to start. If you get on it and just turn the key it will barely turn over like the battery is dead but using the glow plugs for about 30 seconds will...

    X900 Roof

Anybody have any aftermarket ideas for a hard plastic roof for a Kubota X900. There doesn't seem to be much available. I hate to pay the dealer $315 for a piece of plastic and a few u bolts.

    Sorghum Almum

Sorghum Almum is a close cousin to Johnson grass IMO it is a superior plant. Here you can see it is still doing well this late in the year and with no rain in over 3 weeks. It doesn't grow as tall and stringy as Johnson grass does and the stems are a smaller diameter but seems to put out...

Worming calves- Maybe a ques. for Lucky P

At what age should calves get their first worming? I usually work mine at 2 to 2 1/2 months. Should they be wormed then? They are on pasture which gets pretty thin at this time of the year. Thanks

    Here we go Vet wannabe's

I have a 550 lb heifer in my pre-condition program that has been a poor do'er from day one. Not one from my herd but part of a group I bought back in the spring. Anyway I found her yesterday evening about dark sitting off by herself. Got her up and she moved toward the herd but very slowly. I...

    woody tongue

So I have had two cows with woody tongue in the last six months. I know a Iodine solution is the preferred treatment but my cows were pregnant so they suggest treating with Oxytetracycline which I did. In both cases the cows recovered. So now the question, I have read that putting out high...

    Bearing question

I have a 10' Landpride disc with flanged bearings. From the factory the bearing is turned towards the bearing support bracket with the grease zerk on top. They put a notch in the bracket to access the zerk but its very difficult to get a grease gun on it and hold it there to get the grease in...

    Spring Fence clips

My neighbor uses these clips because of arthritis in his hands and really likes them. He gave me a handful and I admit they are rather handy but the skeptic in me always is looking for whats wrong with them. So I ask if anybody has used these and how do they hold up for any length of time...
