    Gas mileage

Does anyone know any ways to get better gas mileage out of your car? I was looking at all those bottles of "gas additives" that boast better performance and better gas mileage and was wondering if any of it is actually true. Also I've seen those open box air filter designs that say they will...

    weak calf

Ok, I've got one that has me stumped. I had a cow and calf disapear from the pasture for 2 weeks. Looked everwhere and in all the neighboring herds. Cow is still missing but the calf showed back up with my herd a week ago. He is quite skinny and lethargic. We walked him into the pens and...

I learned an important lesson last night - handling cattle

I learned an important lesson last night. We worked one herd of cows last night and there was a bull calf, about 500 lbs. that would not go in the pens. We tried to get him in with the cows - he wouldn't go. We turned out a cow and tried to run them together into the pens from the trap - he...

    $1200 check from the govt?

Have ya'll heard about this supposedly $1200 check (for a married couple, $600 for single + $300 per child) we're supposed to be getting somewhere about June? I'd be happy to see the money but somehow I don't think that it is going to stop a recession. What do you think?

    I-69 Trans Texas Corridor

I was wondering if there was anyone else on these boards that these proposed corridors were going to wipe out? Our farm and house plus my MIL's house are all in the "proposed" route. We're going to the town hall meeting tomorrow night in Hempstead, don't know what is going to be discussed but...

    Cancer eye

My vet was telling me about options for a cow w/ cancer eye - If it's small enough they can freeze it off or if not in surrounding tissue they can surgically remove the cancer or they have removed the whole eye and sewn the eyelids shut. I have a couple old cows that are starting to get cancer...

    Hauling Hay (pics)

I finally took in the film, here are a couple pics from when we hauled some hay a few months ago. 1 ton 4x4 truck w/ 40 ft. GN 17 5.5x6 bales, the tractor where we delivered them wouldn't lift them off the trailer so we had to push them off the trailer by hand.

I took in a little 370lb heifer to check the prices and I got $.72 for her :( But I did come home with a SS 6mt bred cow for $300. I could have bought a few more for the same money but figured I'd get skinned if I brought more home then I took there in the 1st place. Guess I'll wait till...

    Sharpening shredder blades

Can someone tell me how to sharpen the blades on a shredder with a grinder without taking them off? It's getting to the point I have to go over twice with the shredder to make it look nice. Thanks!

    Anyone tried it?

Longhorn cheese is not made from longhorn milk - who ever told you that is pulling your leg.

Rogue Bull = bad, bad calves

We had a lease place last year that because of the drought I moved about 1/2 our herd there. It was 400 acres of rough land and no fences except the perimeter. Well, this bull showed up, don't know where he came from or where he went to. We talked to all the bordering places and the sheriff...

    I feel real dumb!

Well, I think I've topped my stupid mistakes again. On Sunday evening I was working on the rakes, which are broke down in a neighbors field. I had the wrong size punch to get a roll pin out with but didn't want to go all the way to the barn again to find another one so I was trying to ease it...

    2,4d and granular fertilizer

How long after granular fertilizer application should I wait to spray 2,4d? I asked the guy at the COOP and he wasn't sure if it would cause a chemical reation w/ the fertilizer if applied directly after fertilizer application.

    skinny calves

Do to the drought last year we leased a large pasture and moved about 1/2 our herd there. We fed a lot of hay but the cows lost condition and the calves are pot bellied. I've moved the calves to our weaning pasture which has thick, knee high rye grass. I have started to see a difference in...

    re-establishing hay field

Our hay field has really gone down hill. There seems to be as many weeds as grass this year. We lighlty disked it last year and it really looks to have done more damage then good. I would like to spray w/ 2-4-D and plant some type of seed to try to keep any existing coastal/bermuda that is...

    Breeding service?

How much would you charge for a man to bring his 3 cows to your pasture to be bred by your bull? It's one of our neighbors and I was going to lease him a young bull but ended up selling him instead. I don't want to take my herd bull over to his place because I've got new calves and don't want...

    selling a bull

I have a 14 mt old bull that I have with 5 heifers. I guy came to look at the heifers and wanted the bull. I didn't have him listed for sale in the ad. I told him I would sell him for $1000 but I would not guarantee him because he said he wanted to put him on 30 heifers. He said if I didn't...
