Bagging up - first calf heifer

I have a first calf heifer due in 2 weeks. She’s just now ever so slightly starting to bag. My previous first calf heifers began bagging over a month before calving. Is there a lot of variation on bagging up for first calf heifers?

    Feed with bugs

I work at a feed store and we got a pallet of sweet cob that has little teeny tiny bugs in it. After leaving it in the sun the bugs are all dead. I am able to get the pallet at no cost, would it be ok to feed to my feeder calves? I would hate to waste a whole pallet and really I don’t think...

When to process… always a guessing game.

I have 2 steers and 2 heifers that look to be around 800lbs. Trying to project ahead on when to process. I do finish them out on grain for a minimum of 4 months, last year I did 5. The butcher shop I normally use is closed Nov and Dec so latest I could use them would be mid October to have them...

    Heifer

Yearling heifer, just turned a year old this month. Wanted to keep to butcher later. Thoughts? Shes b&w face/dexter cross. Not usually one to buy anything crossed with dexter as I prefer higher carcass yield. But I know heifers are smaller maturity anyway. Market prices are good also so might...

    Minor Scours

Bottle calf, 3 weeks old, yes he’s still with mama and he attempts to nurse often but she constantly kicks him away. Noticed yesterday morning that he has green liquid diarrhea. I’m assuming green from all the green grass we have. Wanted to get ahead of it so gave a bottle with ReSorb in it last...

    Chances of cow talking calf.

Had to pull a calf on Tuesday night, at approximately 11pm. Had a rough birth, and mama got up and walked away after he was born. Vet tubed calf and administered Draxxin and Bose at approximately 1am Wednesday morning. Calf stayed inside that night. He was extremely weak and we have had low...

    IGR & Bred Cows?

Is this safe for bred cows? Says safe for lactating and non lactating cows but nothing about bred. Anyone used with bred cattle?

    Springing, but no bagging?

Long story short, I bought 4 heifers from a neighbor for a real good price with the intention to finish them out. But, also knew that they were with the bull… so I took my chances. Didn’t want to give Lute in case any were farther along. 1 of them is appearing bred. Big round belly. Been acting...

    Today was the day.

Been waiting for a clear day to vaccinate and deworm the herd. Here in Northern California, we have had an overabundance of rain. Believe me, I am NOT complaining, as years in the past have been a storm or two all winter resulting in virtually no feed and some serious fires due to lots of...

    Deworming.

Vet is coming tomorrow so I’m going to ask him also. But you all here are so knowledgable so I wanted to ask! I usually deworm once a year, in the spring. I have done ivermectin pour on, then last year I did safeguard oral, and this year I was thinking of using Eprinex pour on (because I found 2...

    Well this happened today…..

UGH. Always something, am I right? She was only stuck thankfully for a little bit. Used a sawzall with a metal blade and cut the feeder up. Needless to say, I have NO MORE feeders in the pastures. They are getting hay on the ground now.

    Calf just born, hasn’t nursed

Had a calf born at 12:30 today. Came out health and got up right away. It’s now 4:30 and doesn’t seem like he’s nursed at all. I have tried to get him up to mama and her teat in his mouth but he’s just not interested. He will suckle in my finger a bit.

When to treat symptoms of pneumonia.

I have a calf about 2 months old. Heard her coughing a few days ago, noticed today snotty nose. No other symptoms. Should I take temp and administer antibiotics? I only have LA-300 but can get something else from my vet. We have had some really cold weather - lots or rain too so it’s been really...

Possibility of estimating the age of a cow?

One of the very first cows I bough was back in Feb 2020. I was working at our local feed store and a customer came in and mentioned to me that he had just purchased property locally that had 13 Herefords that came with the property. He was interested in selling them. I ended up purchasing them...

    Small operation - Breeding

I have had cattle for 3 years now and I’m just starting to get the breeding aspect dialed in. You know it takes time, buy the heifers, let them get of age to breed, then wait for calves, and do it all over again. I have 2 heifers that are ready to breed, 2 first calf heifers who calved first...

Looking for a nice heifer bull.

Ran across this bull for sale on Craigslist near me. I know nothing about EPD’s but I want to learn. Just really wanting a decent bull that will be good for heifers. Thoughts...

A days work is never done…

5 days ago had a heifer come up with a slight limp. 3 days ago got her in the squeeze to take a look. Hosed her hoof off to get a good look. Now mind you, I do not by any means have a fancy squeeze… and it was just me, myself, and I attempting to look at this heifer. I’m holding the rope to...

    Prolapsed Heifer

Some back story - 8 year old Hereford heifer (yes she was never bred, she’s a pet). She’s not mine but a client of mine that I ranch sit for. She has had a continuing prolapse for over a year now. She has been to UC Davis 4 or 5 times and they have stitched up her vulva to a small opening...

    Tanning for beginners.

I know I’m taking on quite the process… but the closet tannery too me (2 hours away) wants $14.50/sqft to tan hides. Hides are approx 40-50sqft… I think I’ll try doing it myself yay that cost lol! I laid it out and salted it about 3 weeks ago. Now what next? Thanks!

    Cough.

I noticed my herd start coughing about a week ago. It’s amounted to nothing more than a dry cough. No other symptoms. Thoughts? Thanks, Kassi
