Calling all you good diesel mechanics

I have a JD 6320 . It’s 100 engine hp. It uses the same engine as a JD 6420. Which is 110 engine hp. I run my round baler with it and it does ok on flat ground but falls flat on its face in hills. I talked to my mechanic today about turning it up and he said that pump would have to be sent...

    Hot Mic

I was listening to a feeder sale on LMA this morning. I had my phone in my bibs while I was working. They ran in a set strs in , started the standard spiel; shots weaned, bla bla. Started selling, got a bid and the price started climbing. Then the auctioneer stopped. He said “ they think there’s...

Which big gun would you want?

So I may have a slight addiction to “Kill on one end and maim on the other” I like big calibers but I have a budget. I bought a 300 Win Mag this year and really like it. I’m already thinking something bigger next year. Thinking about a 338 Win Mag, 375 H&H, or a 458 Lott. This is strictly a...

Can we build it? Oh of course we can.

We had had a 40’ x 100’ lean-to taken off a building. We’re not going to replace it so we’re building a new 5’ high by 100’ long pony wall then putting tin on the outside. It was kind of breezy in there today with no north wall on the building.

Ever tried cable for a hot wire?

I put up a hot wire every fall around about ten acres of crop residue for my cows to winter on. I’ve always used regular 12ga electric fence wire and T posts. The wire is a pain to wind back up in the spring. I got to thinking that a light 1/8” cable would be easier to roll up in the spring...

    Our new toy

Some neighbors built two of these probably before I was born. They said this one has been sitting in a barn for close to 20 years. They pulled it out and put a for sale sign on it 3 wks ago. After a little negotiation I got it bought for $1,000. We have some pastures that have really steep...

    Anybody trap anymore?

Back when my kids were little I ran a little trap line between 50-100 sets. Raccoons were my main target. The bottom has been out of the fur market for years. I enjoyed it, but $4 coons don’t pay for the gas let alone my time. Coon hunting and trapping used to be part of winter around here...

    What would you do?

The kids and I are having a lazy day. We’re talking about watching a long movie and I realized that they haven’t seen Lonesome Dove. They made prequels and sequels. Some are good on their own, others not so great.

    Flails or rolls?

I’m afraid my old hay condition is beyond its last leg. I’ve pieced it together for the last two years. The hydraulic motor that drives the entire machine imploded the other night. After talking to the jd parts guy. I’m pretty sure it will cost more to fix than the mower is worth. So I...

    Who made it?

We don’t have a clue who made this chute. It’s kinda Pdr River green but it doesn’t look like any Pdr River I’ve ever seen. It’s definitely well built and heavy. It needs a new floor and we are going to replace the head gate. The round tube is probably 3” and most of the rest is angle iron.

    Breaking loose hubs

I’ve got a JD 4640 with rack and pinion axles. The tire width is set on 30”s. I need to take the duals off to be able to fit on the scale at the grain elevator this fall. I got the duals off, but I want to spread the inside tires to 38”s or 44”s. 30”s are just too narrow on singles to suit me...

    Will we see a 2?

Just can’t seem to find a ceiling on this fed cattle market. Strong demand from consumers is keeping packers aggressive. I really didn’t think we would see $2 fat cattle, but now I’m not so sure.

    Won’t fit the box anymore

For as long as I can remember screamed and cried that finished cattle have to “Fit the Box” For some reason that has all changed. Fit the box- refers to the steaks being relatively similar and fit in an imaginary box. 1,350-1,450 lb finished cattle typically fit the box. In the last six months...

    What’s everyone else using

Even though I freeze brand we still use ear tags for baby calves. I have fairly poor eyesight and a pretty strong stigmatism so I carry a pair of binoculars with when I check cows on grass so I can read ear tags. Last fall my old cheap binoculars finally fell apart. I haven’t replaced them yet...

    A stab in the dark

Had a guy call me this morning. In a semi panic. Has some fall calves that were fine yesterday but not ok today. I’ll give you all the info I have, then post my educated guess later tonight. Two calves out of a group of about 10. Still with the cows. No vaccines. Farm store mineral. Have...

Had the custom grinder show up

I started a new job the first of the year. They feed a lot of cattle with a twin screw vertical mixer. They grind hay and soybean stubble in the TMR normally. Bought some 2yr old hay that was stored outside really cheap. Decided that since the custom guy goes to the neighbors we’d give him a...

    Freeze branding babies

We have always had best results freeze branding in mid February. This year we are going to start breeding hfrs in mid February. I really don't like doing anything to disrupt their normal routine when we're breeding. So I got the brain storm that we could brand them as 3 month old calves...

    Bale grinder

My cows run on corn stalks all winter. They get corn silage and ryelage/haylage in bunks every night. I barrow a bagger and my old chopper doesn’t like hay. So I’m not planning on chopping any more hay or rye. I have talked to a couple custom guys. What they charge and their minimum number of...

    Diamond K cattle co

So my dad and my daughter and son run about ten cows with my cow herd. My parents cover all the expenses for those cows and the calf checks go in the bank to help with college some day. Dad had these made for Christmas presents: Back Front

    Lever gun magazine plug

Illinois has FINALLY decided that next year we can have a rifle deer season. But. . . There's always a but. They have a ridiculous amount of restrictions on what calibers and guns we can use. Has to be a .30 cal or larger. Necked cartridges can only have a case length of 1.4" or less. Or a...
