Who's fixin to start feeding hay

The local feed store may offer what they call “ground feed” and is sold in bulk ration. It is what I get in my feeder & sometimes by the ton in a big waterproof bag. It has crushed corn and little pellets. Ground feed costs a fraction of what cubes cost. See if your local feed stores have...

They're getting worse than the hogs

Depends on what is meant by "hunting"--it is war here fought in skirmishes. We killed over 90 last year through combination of hunting and trapping. Neighbors hired helicopter to fly river and shoot as many as they could. When my neighbors help with deterrence, the pressure makes the sounders...

    Bred Heifers requiring Nursing Intervention?

I have had two heifers that didn’t nurse right away. Brought new mama & calf to lot. One heifer we milked & her teats seemed plugged up. Calf nursed her that night. She has been good since. 2nd heifer didn’t nurse calf in field but let it nurse while eating feed in lot. I kept both those new...

Cattle people/ farmers are getting old.

Land itself makes money. It is the investment based on how you choose to work it. I am not willing to eat plant-based meat substitute products so raising a small herd 30-40 allows me to raise some hamburger and steaks;). I live on property that my parents placed in a trust. It is a pine...

What's the scoop on braford attitude?

The F1 heifer in my profile pic and that Aussie have had lots of run-ins. My half Brahmas do not like dog but tolerate him as long as he is in back of side by side. When he runs in pasture and gets close to calves, all mamas (red angus, black angus, brangus and halves) all give him protective...

    I'm out

Our ranch has rotational timber management (some land for wildlife habitat—nice way of saying rocks and mountain) and I have cattle. The timber is thinned twice and then harvested. Plots at different stages keep $ coming in for taxes, insurance, etc.

    Fencing question

When I can get a fence crew, I hire them to put up OK Brand barbed wire 6 strand. Along river there are places they cut hog panels and wire it down below fence. River flows thru but cows stay in. Last year couldn’t find a crew so husband and I put up 16 ft hog panels with 6 ft T posts between...

Freezer is full and 1/2 beef coming, canning?

Canning meat is easy in pressure cooker. Use quart jars with meat chunks. No fluid. 1 teaspoon salt on top. Seal. Cook for 1 hour 15 minutes at ten lbs pressure. Let cool. You will hear a thunk as jars seal. It will have meat juices in the jar that makes fantastic gravy. Venison, beef, fish...

Big cats don’t live in OK

Although the official state story is big cats don’t live in Oklahoma, they do pass thru/migrate. This one was at our cabin in 2019. I don’t like coyotes but would rather deal with them than big cats. Anyone else see surprising wildlife?

    Ideas to catch "wild" cows

Caught three 4-year old steers that escaped roundup by a rancher for several years. They ran to old mining pits that held water and lots of brambles. It took two Catahoula dogs about 30 minutes to pop the steers out to the trail. One wanted to break back and got a dog on his ear and another on...

    Smoothing out rough ground

Find a guide that uses dogs and horses if you like to ride. It is exciting to hear dogs circling a group and the boars sharpening their teeth. Lots of fun. My favorite Christmas we did this.

    Cattle Buyers

Check out https://www.cattlerange.com. My cousin has sold on that site. Craigslist if you want to sell local other than sale barn. There is a video sales channel on my tv feed but I don’t know anyone selling there.

    Tenderizing Beef

Instapot on a pressure setting can make meat tender. Cook swiss steaks etc. The quality of beef sold in supermarkets require a bite like a wolverine.
