    Steer stuffer worth it?

Are these gravity fed steer stuffers or automatic feeders that dispense periodically during the day? I grew up using gravity fed home built models but they were really only used the last 3-5 months of fattening. We used them with ground ear corn which adds quite a lot of roughage to the ration...

    EPDs

I'm assuming that's a reference to this. EPDs are a "tool." Like any tool if used inappropriately your results may vary. For example, a circular saw is a tool, but if you use it as a hammer don't act surprised if it doesn't work well. :-) I have calves on the ground from 3 sires -- one...

    We did it

So how do you cook these brisket steaks? short rib steaks? ox tail steaks?

    New Bull-EPD Questions

EPDs are a tool. If you want to use them take the time to understand what they are and aren't (I'm familiar with Angus and Wagyu epds but of no help with Sim). EPDs can be useful but they can also be misleading. We use AI for our breeding and we moved several years ago to only using high...

    Replacement females???

If my heifers had to fight off cougars, wolves, grizzlies they'd slip a few more pregnancies too. :-)

    Sunn Hemp

Interested as well -- not familiar with the plant -- looked up seed options and saw that the flowers/seeds can be toxic to cattle? (HERE is where I saw that)

    Wagyu X Calves

I have a jersey cow and a jersey/angus cross cow. I've never crossed Wagyu x Jersey -- but I have bred the x-bred to wagyu (AI). If you have patience and a good feeding program it would probably work fine as private sale beef. They will grow slow. They should marble very well. They will...

The Science of Grain Finishing Beef

Found this podcast with him. I've only listened to the first 30 min or so -- but if you take a listen I think you will get some of what you are asking answered.

The Science of Grain Finishing Beef

Any chance it will be recorded or streamed? I'd be very interested in what he has to say.

Black Angus EPD Comparison Tool Site at "bullbarn.com"

Chuckie -- I apologize for letting you know, but if you think the bull barn one is neat -- don't go use the ABS Global one -- you can do all of those searches AND filter on multiple EPDs to narrow your search!! It will blow your mind!!! haha. (I'm guessing ST Genetics/Select Sires etc all...

The Science of Grain Finishing Beef

The thread title says "grass" and the body says "grain" finishing. His he speaking to both? Or?

    Minerals

If a cow needs 10 ppm (parts per million) daily, and I have minerals that show 150 ppm and another that shows 2500 ppm (both of which list copper sulfate as the source) how much copper is taken in and how much is excreted in a daily 4 oz suggested ration? ;) The 2500 ppm seems like overkill --...

    Minerals

I feed mineral -- vitaferm, a local grain mill version, and a large farm store chain label -- I vary throughout the year. However, like Travlr suggests -- I'd suggest anyone with questions go look up a ration balancer tool if for no other reason to get an idea what feedstuffs generally provide...

    Skid Steers

Silver -- what do your neighbors run? Or locals? My skid runs on all ground types (concrete, asphalt, dirt, gravel, fields, corn stalks, pasture, hills, ice, snow, blizzards). I'd love tracks but several ppl advised me that due to the variety of work and ground type that tires would be the...

    Frame Score

I appreciate all the replies. Angus sires have gotten "moderate" (or short, haha). It's interesting looking at the measurements and the epds and where those contradict.

    Frame Score

Looking at AI sires for 2024. Trying to understand Frame Score vs actual measurements. One bull has a MFS (I assume mature frame score) of 4.9 with a mature height of 56 in. Another has a score of 5.2 and a mature height at 33 months of 54 in. Does that make sense?

Stirring the pot on the LH/corriente topic

There is indeed a difference (beyond price) between Japanese raised wagyu and US 50/50/% wagyu crosses. I've had both. I raise the latter/fill my freezer with the latter.

Some thoughts and questions about beef

Wagyu fat potentially is healthier than other beef breeds (or less unhealthy). This was the only scholarly article that I see that in (it's a few scrolls down under Fatty Acid composition): https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5243954/ If you haven't tried FB Wagyu or Wagyu cross beef...

    Wagyu X Calves

I may have missed it -- but what kind of cows do you have? Wagyu crosses out of good angus cattle can wean off just fine (genetics). But they can also be runts :-). I've used black wagyu (AI) for several years on heifers. Yes they tend to be calving ease -- but that isn't a guarantee either...

What Age Do You Take Steer to Butcher?

We send 15+ to the butcher each year (direct sale beef). Our local lockers are taking 2025 bookings (booked out 18+months). We just booked dates for the calves that are in utero. Genetics plays a huge role in both growth and marbling (we raise PB angus and angus/wagyu crosses). My dad sent...
