    It happened again.

I am new with cattl, going into my third year. Our first calving presented a problem when the cow lay down on a gentle slope and could not get up because her legs were pointing uphill. Fortunately we discovered it in time and were able to turn her around where upon she and the calf immediately...

    Grass fed frame scores?

With the increasing emphasis on grass raised and finished cattle what would be the optimal size range for breeders. Some have said not larger than frame score 4 but what would be the bottom size limit?

Can I give away free beef?

I have a couple of cows that have been open so long that I have given up on them. I was thinking about butchering them. The problem is that my wife and I could never eat even one in a reasonable time. If I sold them and used the money to buy store beef I would probably only get a third as much...

    When do heifers start 'showing'.

How far in advance of birthing do heifers start showing teats and begin developing udders? I would like some advance warning of when they will calve. Some of mine are showing teats 2-3 inches long and udders about the size of hot water bottles while other have teats 1.5-2 inches long and only...

    Breeding pregnant cows?

Why would a bull repeatedly try to breed with a cow that is already very pregnant? Are they just like humans, whenever and wherever the urge hits them?

    Bovine breeding habits?

Will a bull breed the same cow twice during the same cycle. If a cow has already been bred by another bull will a second bull still breed her during the same cycle?

    Festulolium?

Does anyone have personal experience with festulium (perrenial ryegrass x meadow fescue hybrid)? How does it handle summer drought? Can it be used for winter stockpile? Long lived?

Are Randalls the only breed that show the lineback color pattern?

    Color of tattoo ink

Has anyone ever used white tattoo ink on black eared cattle? I am raising some registered cattle that must be ear tattooed. Even green ink is near impossible to read. I see in a goat supply catalog that there is a white ink available. Don't see why it shouldn't work.

    Just starting out (photos)

A few informal photos. Not the best poses but do they look like beef cattle? From mid-May to mid-September we only got 3.5 inches of rain. At times the tall fescue sprigs were only 3-4 inches tall and 12 to 18" apart. We had a good crop of wooly croton weeds though. They haven't had any hay and...

    Premature calf?

Has anyone ever heard of a cow having calves only seven months apart. The first was normal size. The second was/is very small (prematurity?) but very healthy and active. Not at all sickly or weak.

    HICKIES?

I am a newbie. Be gentle with me. Yesterday I noticed four bare patches on the back of one of our cows. The patches are on the upper back from forward of the pin bones to about the middle of the loin. They are 3-5 inches in diameter. The skin is as smooth as though the hair had been shaved or...

    WEE TYKE

Going from a discussion of a huge calf that was so large it ended up killing itself and its mother I move to the other extreme , a cute, healthy little calf born naturally without assistance Photos are posted.

    Birds and the Bees?

I am REAL new at this cattle raising. During each cycle is it normal for a bull to breed an individual cow more than once? How many times? If more than one bull is in the pasture will they both breed with the same cow during the same cycle or will she refuse to stand for a second bull once...

    Acorns?

I am new at this. I know deer, pigs, tukeys, squirrels, etc all eat acorns but will it hurt cattle if they eat too many, how ever much that is. We have a bumper acorn crop this year and my animals all hanging out under the oaks vacuuming acorns like they were popcorn while ignoring perfectly...

    Beef's biggest problem

It seems almost everyone has an explanation for the problems confronting the beef industry. It may be beef quality (lack of marbling, etc.), fat/cholesterol scares, BSE hysteria. I suggest there is another endemic problem that many people would rather avoid. Below is a list of the kinds of...
