    Unusual Calving

We only have 24 cows calving of which 7 are first calving heifers. The heifers were synched and AI'd to calve 1st March and the bull went in with the cows the day I AI'd the heifers. So at this point , the day before due date, we have 16 calves on the ground of which 13 are bull calves. I...

    Grass finished beef

We have a grass finished beef program here in Central Oregon and I am sheep, alpaca and llama shearer on the side. Was shearing a couple of sheep for a gal who asked how our beef program was going. She then said, in all seriousness, that they were ready to market their beef because their grass...

    Cow attacking calf

Had a first for me with a 6 year old cow last night. She had a backwards calf( feet showing) so got her in the chute and pulled it without any difficulty, got the calf into a dry bedded pen and let the cow in and she proceeded to attack it with head, front feet flashing ,full on flared nostrils...

Hereford bull for Red Angus heifers

I have a really nice, I think, group of red angus heifers that I am considering AI'ing to a Polled Hereford bull and was looking for some recommendations for bulls that would do the job for me. I am not against keeping replacements from my first calvers if they are good enough so I guess I am...

    Corriente Finished beef

Question for people with experience with Corriente. Was a craigslist ad here in Central Oregon where a guy was advertising to "butcher ready" steers - weighing between 550 and 650 lbs. I can't imagine any animal being ready to butcher at those weights bit is it possible with a corriente ? I...

Love it when the "heifer" bull does the job.

Last heifer calved unassisted last night for a 100% problem free heifer calving with the chosen bull. I used Halfmann Hustler R588 ( Red Angus from Genex) and you can put money on me using him again next year.

    Earliest premi to survive ?

So just interested in what is the earliest premature born calf you have had survive. Wondering because I had an early one born this evening that I'm tube feeding in by the heater and it is a minimum of 4 weeks early if she was mated the day the bull was put in.

Leaving replacement heifers on Dam through first winter

Have read a couple of articles recently about leaving replacement heifers on their dams through their first winter. Haven't tried but I am intrigued by the idea. Has anyone here done this ? Pros and cons ? cheers Goddy

    Isn't this one a herd improver !

http://bend.craigslist.org/grd/3590254258.html First time I've tried to put a link from Craigslist - hope it works. At least they aren't touting him as registered - just out of quality stock , must have meant poor quality with feeding levels to match!

Are the 1150-1200 pound cows reality or myth ?

Have read and heard about these super efficient 1150 - 1200 pound cows and wondered how many folks actually have them and whether or not they are actually weighed at that rate or estimated. What bought this line of thought was we weaned our calves today and just for grins I thought I'd weigh our...

    Best ( favorite) cow empty

You know how we all make blanket statements like " my cows must calve unassisted and get back in calf or they are down the road" well my best ( read favorite if being totally honest ) came up empty at preg test time. In all honesty how many folks would make an exception for the one cow and...

    Target liveweight for mating heifers

I'm interested to know what you experienced cattlemen ( and ladies too) have for a target liveweight for mating your yearling heifers. Just got my scale set up done and weighed my yearlings today. The average age is 360 days , just been on grass and hay , the heifers averaged 787 lbs ( high of...

    Bull too young ?

I'm interested in opinions on the age of young bulls for successful mating . I have 15 cows and 6 heifers to mate and have been offered a pretty nice young bull at a good price. He would be just over 13 months when I need to start mating - do you think this is risky or should age just be one...
