    Angus, DNA for sire?

I had a calf that I am unsure of the sire on. AI'd the cow, 2 weeks later put a bull in, SAW her get bred, 30 days later let her run with the commercial cows, and 3 bulls. She just calved.......so 3 possible sires. I looked on the angus web site, but didn't find any info on parent testing...

    keeping water open in winter

I have corn stalk ground, and wheat re-growth to run my cattle on for free this fall/winter. Both pieces of land connect to my pasture. BUT.....I have drink ponds. (dug-out, stock dam...) what ever you call the hole in the ground with water. I need a way to keep the water open in a small...

    My bull has ticks?

I was checking cows today, and a bull calf had a tick on his butt. I got it pulled off, but it was strange looking. Not like the blood filled dark ones you see on a dog. It was longer, skinnier, and flesh colored. Then I noticed the older bull had them in his "arm pit" area front and back...

    Bull Drowned

Has anyone ever had a full grown cow drown? I turned my 2 year old bull in with the cattle and the 3 year old bull the other day, and they got to fighting. The bigger one pushed the other into the pond, which was not quite up to his back, and they continued to fight. The larger one would use...

    calf got kicked, broken tooth

I had a new born calf that got kicked in the head by the cement feed bunk and it somewhat broke a front tooth. The tooth is broke and flipped down, but still in there, like the root and stub, and alot of blood. There is a tooth beside it that seemed to wiggle a little, but isn't busted like...

    left over dairy feed, disease

I live a mile from a 3,000 head dairy, and they have what they call "push out feed". The left over feed, pushed out of the barns twice a day, into a pile. They sell the feed for $15 a ton. I am a little leary on bringing it home to feed to my beef cows because of illnesses and disease from...

    Effects of negative SC EPD

I am hoping someone can help me understand the SC EPD, and the effects on my herd. My AI tech always tells me higher is better, since I am breeding for replacements, so the calves will mature faster. I see alot of bulls that I like the looks of and the numbers are good, except for a negative...

    extra teat, strange....

I have an angus heifer due to calve in the next couple days. Looking at her udder this am and noticed an extra teat. I have seen smaller extras on the back of the udder, but this one is of normal size, and between the front and rear quarter on the right side. Does this have the potential to...

    Looking for heated bucket

Anyone know where to order a heated bucket for a few head of sheep. Atleast 5 gallon capacity. Farm Supply, and Runnings only have the dishes for dogs.

    Fire ants

A neighbor went to Brownsville, TX, and to "thank" me for watching his place, he brought me back a nice 5 foot palm tree.....full of fire ants! How do I kill them without killing the plant? I have been spraying the outside of the container with ant killer, but they are crawling out of the...

    frozen alfalfa

I have a small pasture with quite a bit of alfalfa in it. The cattle have been off for a few months and it has grown back quite well. We had a light frost a few nights ago, but the alfalfa is not discolored. Can I still cut it and put it up for hay? Or will it have nitrate poisoning potential?

standing heat or 12 hrs. after

I have a cow that has in the past 3 years not taken when I synchro and time AI, so I am going to try to do it on natural heat. I called my AI tech to see if he would be able to come 12 hours after standing heat, he said if he was in the area, otherwise he'll just do it at standing heat. What...

    Pricing a PB angus pair

My AI tech has wanted to buy a flush out of one of my PB angus cows since I bought her. I am thinking of selling him the cow and her calf, but have no idea what to ask. She just had her 2nd calf a day ago. Another bull. I paid $2300 for her as a calf, off the cow, and she is halter broke...

    $$$ milk replacer $$$

I was at the feed store this AM, milk replacer will be going from $54 to $81 next week. WOW! And why? Can you feed the dump milk from treated cows? I live near a 3000 hd dairy, so was just wondering if that was safe to do?

    dumb bull calf

I am going on day 3 with a dumb bull calf. Usually they are the big ones I have trouble with, and I usually have them going the next day. Not this one! And he was only #63. I think maybe a little early? I tubed him colostrum when he was 2 hrs old, and have been milking mom every four hours...

    grey eyed angus?

I had an angus calf born three days ago, and just noticed today that his eyes are a grey color. He seems fine otherwise. I have never seen anything but the dark brown. Is this somewhat common, or do I need to watch him/do something?

    Brisket Tag

Nobody around here sells brisket tags, so, I'll have to order. Can they be put in newborn calves? Are they difficult to use? Any pro's or con's, vs. typical ear tags? I am kind of nervous that I could damage something if I apply the tag too high or too low, any chance of that? Thanks!

    frozen ears

Any tips on saving ears on new calves. Had the first one this am, at -9* temp, with some wind. Got the ears thawed out, but a few hours later mom had them wet and frozen stiff again. Looks like I should have a few more calves in the next couple days, and the forcast has highs of -2, and lows...
