Haven't been here in a long time ... but got some cows

So yeah I havent really been on CT for a long while, I've looked every now and then. Havent been doing much stuff with cattle for the last three years since shifting to the other side of the country, cattle work has been scarce, and finding time to fit it into my full time work schedule plus my...

    royal show next week

... And i'm nervous! Never before been so nervous at the prospect of an upcoming show - I feel a bit silly :-) I have three heifers a bull and a handful of penned steers that will arrive at the show next week thursday. Still haven't got them clipped. Bull still tries to kill me every now and...

    night time visitor

So my other half and I were sitting watching tv and eating dinner tonight when I heard a noise. Sounded like there was a mouse or something in a plastic bag. Looked out the window onto the patio and there is an honest to goodness fox standing on the garden bed on my patio, a metre away from me...

    how well do they remember?

Ok so i'm wondering ... How well do you reckon cattle remember things? Two weeks ago I went and broke those heifers in ... A day and a bit and they were leading like champions. The other two I just tied and let them fight the pole. I'll be working them again this weekend after two weeks of...

    excited :-)

I'm about to get back into the show circuit, and i'm excited :-) its been too long since i've played with cattle and i've missed it. Next weekend i'll be heading out to a farm to break in some cattle for a breeder. Three heifers, a bull and some steers. I can't wait to see them. Should be a...

from no feed to show in eight weeks ... can it be done?

Ok so here's the thing. I've picked out my calf for NEXT years show, she is a couple months old and built like a proverbial out house, should do well in the steer competition. Now i'm eyeing off her sister from last year, for this years show if that makes sense. She's sixteen months old, on...

    Australian version of craigslist

Made me chuckle today. Jersey bull calf for sale, "mum is a full jersey, but black and white due to some distant ancestors who were friesian/crossbred" um ... yeah, ok he will make a great breeding bull for someone

    Checking in

Hi there, been too long since I've been here. Life gets in the way, as it does. Hoping to rectify that recently, as I've realised I've missed the place :( Not a lot of spare time atm though so we shall see. I have recently moved from the city onto 5 acres (missed the country too much, only...

    Out of curiosity - branding

What percentage of branding in America is done the way BRG showed in his recent photos (with horses and by roping the calves), versus branding the calves in a set of yards/race/table/cradle?

A pretty handy female I thought

Apologies this was taken on my mobile phone so pic quality isnt great, also the cow wasnt stood up or anything. She was about to go into the auction ring. But this is a 7 yr old cow who recently won champion female at our national show and sale, she had a big strapping bull calf at foot (you...

How to avoid a speeding ticket

HOW TO AVOID A SPEEDING TICKET! I was pulled over the other day for driving 55 MPH in a 25MPH school zone. I told the officer that I wouldn't give him my name and I didn't have a license because I lost it on my 4th DUI and I could not be bothered to go to court on it, and I didn't have the...

    Bareback riding

Had a bit of a revelation yesterday when I jumped on patch and rode him bareback at the end of our riding session, back down to his paddock. I loved it. For the first time on a horse I actually felt natural, balanced and coordinated. I felt in touch with the horse, it was lovely.

    Trotting

Bear in mind I dont know much here ... Most of the time, Patch has a rather rough trot. But riding him yesterday, I noticed there were a few times when he had a really beautiful smooth trot, soooooo much nicer. So ... WHY IS THAT? And how do I encourage/tell him to trot like that ... lol it...

Pics of the horse I went to see today

This is the guy I went to see today. Wet weather and a bunch of silly little things kept me from seeing him sooner. His name is Patch, he is a 13.2hh gelding, and he is 24/25 yrs old. When I got there he was up in the paddock with the sheep, the owner went out and caught him easily, looped a...

A few pics of my goats for something different

Just some pics of my goats ... they are all my pets ... though they are breeders as well. They will all be going on lease (except Dotti and Bullseye) in a week or two, for two years, and I'm going to miss them so so so so so so much :frowns: :cry2: I love the little buggers Today was time to...

Just wanted to brag a bit

haha, just wanted to tell someone. I've been nominated for breed captain for melbourne show. Its such a huge honour and I feel very proud of myself. And looking forward to the job if they do choose me. Also, I finally got around to uploading pics from Canberra show. They are in the breeds board.
