Stirring the pot on the LH/corriente topic

Sim-angus cows are still popular up here in N.D.

    Head sausage

Love it! My Irish grandmother (1890-1979) used to make it here in North Dakota.

    How do you heat?

Propane (house), electric Ritchie cattle waterer. We take heating seriously in North Dakota.

    Spraying by plane

You’d be amazed at what those pilots live and love to fly around. Drones are improving—my neighbor hired a drone guy to desiccate 1/2 section of sunflowers after his regular spray flying guy wound up in the Obits. I watched for a little while. Two drones operating off a gravel road. Guy kept...

    Breeding bull to daughters

I keep heifers because they are raised to know and work with me and my farm. They know the paths I want them to walk, from pen to pen and pasture to pasture. And they last longer on my farm than most animals I have bought. A closed herd is best for managing disease. That said, it is hard to...

Good to have more of the Chosen Frozen on board. North Dakota greetings to y’all!

Greg Judy and Profit per Acre

I keep 100 percent of my cattle in drylot 4-5 months just like every other North Dakota farmer most years. Winters are long and very, very hard.

What should we ask for deposits for beef?

Have never charged a deposit, but should. Have sold to a couple of relatives on “time.” Never a problem. But as Ann Landers said, “You can loan money to a relative or you can give money to a relative — the result is the same.”

anyone having power problems today. Auroras tonight?

If you’ve never seen them in person, just remember they only look this way to a digital camera. To the naked eye, just imagine this in a sort of b&w.

anyone having power problems today. Auroras tonight?

Yeah, we saw them here in North Dakota. Mrs. Gallagher snapped this in our front yard about 11:00. Good showing!

    Pellet Grills

I hear rabbit pellets are OK, but they need to be very dry.

Your Opportunity to Chime in on Greg Judy's Methods

I’m not real sure about the university anymore. But they are listening to the gurus — no one should close their minds. NDSU at Dickinson R/E Center found some good numbers with Aberdeen Angus a couple of years ago. Is that 1600 lb. cow weaning an 800 lb. calf?

Your Opportunity to Chime in on Greg Judy's Methods

The difference between a 4-frame critter and a 5-frame is two inches between the belly and the ground, which doesn’t weigh very much and you can’t eat it.

Your Opportunity to Chime in on Greg Judy's Methods

I’m looking to raise grass efficient 1200/1300 lb. cows to replace the corn-fed 1800-1900 cows common up here.

    New radio in my 7130

Wish you well with that. Is this your loader tractor?

Your Opportunity to Chime in on Greg Judy's Methods

Finding “little” cows is next to impossible up north. Also, with Pharo, I’m looking to breed in other genetic benefits — especially grass efficiency, fleshing ability, low maintenance, calving ease, longevity, thickness, muscling, hair coat, fly resistance, disposition, and masculinity. Also I...

Your Opportunity to Chime in on Greg Judy's Methods

I am intrigued by Greg Judy’s discussion of cow size and how it may relate to lbs. of weaned calf per acre vs. lbs. weaned per cow. Kit Pharo has the same idea — most of the time a pot load of 500 lb calves should bring more $ than a pot load of heavier calves, especially if the smaller ones...

Your Opportunity to Chime in on Greg Judy's Methods

Please excuse the typos — big old pop-up on my iPod. Had a nice visit with Kit Pharo after leaving y’all last night. Bidding on my 2nd PCC bull at his Colorado sale. Yup, I’m a “herd quitter.”
