    Breeding Season Opener...some questions...

It's been some time since I have posted as 2005 was a rebuilding year for us. I switched over all but two of my hobby herd from crossbred to reg. Beefmasters. Because I had various ages, we needed to wait until some of the heifers and our bull matured. I know with this breed, the bulls take...

    Cattle & Doughnuts

There is a local doughnut place that is willing to give me large quantities of old doughnuts for free or very cheap (They're confirming with district management) for my cows. Any problems with this? Last year we were able to get large quantities of old bread for winter which they scarfed down...

    heifer nursing on heifer

In 5 years of raising our hobby herd, this is a new one on me. We have 16 mos Beefmaster heifer (which I am assuming is bred as she has been exposed to our bull) nursing on an older heifer who is bred as well. The older heifer has no bag and is not due until next Spring. Anyone have any...

Productive Life of Brahma cross cows

I have been raising Brahma crosses for a just few years now and have relative young stock. I was wondering what your average productive life of these crosses such as Beefmaster, Braford, Simbrah cows tends to be. I understand they can go several years beyond the continental breeds.

    Scurs....any disadvantages?

I would'nt think so, but I am not familiar with pure angus. We like a little ear in the south, thus my choosing beefmasters. I figured that because of the 1/4 short horn breeding, that scurs appear in Beefmasters.

    Scurs....any disadvantages?

My year old Beefmaster bull, who came from both polled parents, has sprouted scurs. Any problems with this in my future sales of his calves or in terms of safety. We run horses with our cattle. Thanks.

    Breeding age of Beefmaster Bulls

Can someone give me a rough idea of when my Beefmaster Bull will be old enough to breed. I plan on running him with my small herd of 5 cows in May which would put him at 15 mos. Thanks!

    When do horns sprout?

The BBU does not require weights for registration unless you enroll them in their weights and measurements program.

    Breed sale vs. Private treaty

As I mentioned in my last post, I have a registered Beefmaster bull calf I will be selling, perhaps with his dam. There is a breed sale that is held every so often a few hours from my place. Any advantages or disadvantages over private treaty?

    When do horns sprout?

My Beefmaster cow just calved this morning. She is polled, the sire is not. I plan on registering the bull calf soon because I will be selling him & perhaps his dam (see next post). I have the option of lisiting the calve as polled on the papers. When should the buds appear if they do?

    Cattle Dogs

Top 3 dogs not to work cattle with. I know this because we own all three... 3. Golden Retrievers - They might be great at fetching ducks and the paper, but mine is clueless around livestock. He has a bad habit of running up on my horses behind for no reason at all, and enjoys running the...

    Double Line bred (sp.??)

I have a reg. Beefmaster calf due in the next week or so. The dam is a granddaughter of Levi. The sire is also a grandson of Levi. Different parents of course. I think this is called double line or line breeding? Are there any drawbacks or dangers with this? If we have a heifer, I plan on...

    Cow horse suitability

My two year old Paint Colt is currently away at the trainers to be trained under saddle, and later in the year, shown in Western pleasure. I was considering of sending him for advanced training the following year for reining cow horse training. While he was kept on my ranch, he was pastured...

    first time heifers

Ok Dun, and others...I held off on breeding my heifers in my starter herd until they were two. Everything I read said that letting them mature a little longer would make their first calving easier. Your thoughts? These were Hereford/Angus/Brahma cross heifers.

    Trailer floor!

I would go with rubber horse matts as well. My stock trailer we use for both horses and cows, and it makes cleanup a breeze.
