    Adjusting Duals on JD 4650

Recently bought a JD4650 that has new duals on the back. Currently they are spaced for row crop planting. We will only be using the tractor for pasture tillage. Is there any harm in adjusting the outside duals closer to the inside tires? Is there any advantages to leaving them where they...

    Pre Conditioning Pasture/Trap Size

Is a couple acre trap per 100 head adequate or should it be more?

    Pre Conditioning Pasture/Trap Size

Each trap will have adequate shade, water, and fresh hay. Guess what I am asking, is there any benefit to larger pens vs. smaller pens? Calves will be fed twice a day.

    Pre Conditioning Pasture/Trap Size

Thanks for the input. The land has good drainage with a natural slope. At first I was thinking of 1 acre pens per 100 head of lite weight calves but re-thinking 2-3 acre traps might better and easier on the calves.

    Pre Conditioning Pasture/Trap Size

I've read and heard the rule of thumb for a feedlot setup is around 250sq' to 600sq' of pen size per head. Bunk space is around 1' per head also. Is there a rule of thumb for pre-conditioning traps or pens for space per animal? If someone wanted to maximize pasture size without crowding...

    Massey 4710

Looking at buying a new tractor and have been looking at the Massey 4710. The dealer down the road had a 5711 I looked at last week. A very nice tractor but I think it is more tractor than I really need. It seems the 4710 will fit my needs better. Tractor will be used for pulling a weed...

    Too Late to Fertilize

I planted 12 acres of oats back in mid October planning on getting rain. Well didn't get any rain until a few weeks ago. Didn't see any sprouts until last week. Looks like most places have sprouted pretty well. Am I too late to fertilize and top dress with rye grass? Typically it is used as...

    Hay Profits

I updated my sheet showing labor for myself and part-time help during hay season. I lowered the tonnage per acre some. Seems these numbers represent what I have read. Thanks

    Hay Profits

I attached an equipment list I put together. This land is owned free and clear with hay storage on it. My numbers defiantly are not perfect just trying to see what 100 acres will make someone on an average year. I know guys in this area that irrigate and cut 4 sometimes 5 cuttings a year...

    Hay Profits

Looking for some input on if my numbers I am figuring on baling 100 acres of clean coastal are way off. This would be a new business venture in the future. The sheet includes buying equipment with a 30k yearly note and putting in an irrigation system. Something like a K pod system. My...

    Feedyard Question

I have been interested in a owning a small feedlot type setup for sometime. I have the land to to operate a 1000-2000 head facility. This would be buying small 2-3 weight calves thru the sale barn and selling around 7-8 weight. I know a lot of variables go into profit margins. Is there a...

    P+D or Regular 24D

I have always sprayed and had good results with P+d for the last several years. This year my weed problem isn't terrible and I am wondering if I can get by with regular 24D. It seems to be around $6 an acre and P+D is around $7.25 an acre. I have around 100 acres to spray. Is it worth saving...

    Planting Bermuda Seed By Coastal

Thanks for the response. The areas I would plant bermuda would be areas that get mowed and not baled. Main reason to plant bermuda is try to keep KR to a minimum and out of the coastal fields.

    Planting Bermuda Seed By Coastal

I am in the process of getting 17 acres around my house sprigged with Coastal in the next few weeks. I have plowed and disk my pastures but still have some areas either on roads or around my pond that I didn't disk. Also the strip between my fence and the county road isn't disk. These areas...

Plow vs. Disking vs. Chisel Plow

Thanks for the input on the plow. I finally got everything plowed and I am starting to disk now. I have noticed in the middle of different areas I have created a valley where the plow came together from two different directions. Is there any easy way to fill the "valley" back in with dirt...
