    Premie calf....advice

Anyone have experience with premie calves? Calf was born 25/26days early. It's about 2 hrs old and isn't trying to stand even when lifted up. Bottle fed it colostrum and it drank good. Took it to house because it feels like 25° outside and we are getting day 3 of snow/rain. Figured it wouldn't...

    Unsure of calving

Well, checked cow again an hour later and calf was on the ground sitting upright and mostly cleaned off. Super super small bull calf so I'd say it is in fact 25 days early. Took it from cow and it's in our house now. He can't stand but drank colostrum replacer pretty much like a normal calf. He...

    Unsure of calving

Cow is acting like she is early stages of calving (kind of) but I don't believe she is due for 25 more days. Tonight she went to the back of the pasture for a bit during feeding time and has been acting restless ever since. That was about 7 hrs ago. Has bagged some but not tight like she...

    Newborn calf: nursed?? Pee?

Short version: Will a newborn calf pee if it hasn't nursed yet??? Long version: Bull calf was born this morning and I went from being convinced it hasn't nursed to now thinking maybe it has and its frusterating the heck out of me! Obviously its real important if it hasn't gotten colostrum...

    Bull Critique

Looking for some thoughts on this bull. Strengths and weaknesses. He is almost 14 months old and will be going out with the herd in about another month. This is the first time using a young one so hoping it goes well. A little worried about the amount of cows he needs to cover.

    Your best guess

We had to switch bulls mid season back in 2021 due to our first bull getting injured. There was just one calf, a heifer, born in 2022 that we are unsure of who the sire is. For us it doesn't matter a whole lot but sometimes I get really curious so thought I would get guesses here... Bull #1...

    Newborn Calf...rough start

She sure is! Thank you for your inputs and encouragement! I think we will hold off on offering her any solids until she goes a while without any more downs!

    Newborn Calf...rough start

Yeah, 2 pints 3x a day. Vet thought that was good to start and then said offer 3 pints which we just started the other day. Calf probably weighs 50lbs at most. Well this morning she was back to her normal self! Bouncing around and hungry. Sucked the bottle great. Only gave her 2 pints instead...

    Newborn Calf...rough start

I meant to update the other day but now I'm glad I didn't cause things suddenly changed. Starting Sunday (so 3 days ago) she changed from not wanting to drink and looking a bit down, to getting up when she say us and looking for a meal! She took the bottle like a normal calf! We were feeding her...

    Newborn Calf...rough start

She didn't want to suck Friday so we tubed 2 pints in her around 2pm. Plus gave her some vit shots. At 9pm that night she drank 2 pints like a normal calf! But now Sat morning she is back to not sucking. Going to try again in a bit before tubing her. Vet checked her out Fri and said she seems...

    Newborn Calf...rough start

One of our older beef cows had a heifer calf early Tuesday morning. Calf is quite small and momma has some pretty large teats. Part way through the day we decided that calf hadn't nursed but she was exploring so we remained hopeful. We decided to bottle feed her some colostrum. She only got...

    Sick calf...not looking good

The calf didn't make it through Friday night. She wasn't dehydrated, didn't have scours, and no fever the last day or two before she died. Not sure what all was wrong with her. Thanks for all the input.

    Sick calf...not looking good

Calf is still hanging on. Surprised she made it through the night. She doesn't look any better though...seems to be the same as last night. Her fever is gone but now her temp is low at 101°. Would think she would start looking better today if she's going to pull through but not betting that will...

    Sick calf...not looking good

I knew the Dams due date and calf was born 5 days early. She calved 5 days early last year as well. If only this time went as smoothly! Sorry to hear about your rough start.

    Sick calf...not looking good

Some might have seen my post the other day about a newborn calf (born Mar 4th) having nursing issues but looked healthy. Well yesterday she started to look sick so we decided to pull her from mom since that wasn't working anyways. Took her temp and it was 104. Looked a little dehydrated but not...

    What's your guess...calf nursed?

Navel and joints look good but tonight calf does have a fever of 104. Looking a little dehydrated and very lethargic. Giving up on it working with the Dam so took calf away and hoping she pulls through. Gave iv fluids and antibiotic tonight. Didn't drink much milk so might tube her later if she...

    What's your guess...calf nursed?

We were able to restrain the cow the other day and helped calf to nurse. She sucked good but didn't get latched without assistance. They are penned up and hoping to see calf nurse today otherwise will help again later. Calf must have gotten stepped on or something the other morning because she...
