    Friday evening

I'm sitting on the front porch watching the cows and calves graze by while enjoying an adult beverage and counting my blessings. What a great way to spend a Friday evening.

weather related issues in the hay meadow...

The 10+ inches of rain in May alone is causing some problems in my hay meadow. It appears there are several low lying areas that sat underwater too long and the grass has died. :( The rest of the meadow is growing like the proverbial house afire. Looks like next year's project will be...

    suggestions for summer annual

we're in the process of clearing 35+/- acres since early spring. the rain has really slowed down progress on this project. i'm leaning towards a warm season annual this year for erosion control and some grazing. any suggestions regarding what to plant here in North Central Texas? i have zero...

    Rain and hay making.....or not

Just checked the gauge; it's at 2.1inches and still raining. I'm thankful for the rain but we really need a small break to get some hay cut and baled. We've been trying to clear and clean up a pasture since mid December. The weather has really slowed us down to say the least. I heard on the news...

    Fertilizing pastures today

The weather liars are calling for rain on Saturday so we slung out some fertilizer out on a couple of pastures this morning. We don't generally fertilize much besides the hay meadow but we're renovating a couple of pastures this year. I don't want to graze them much if any this year so we bit...

    I have a weird question.....

I was talking to a friend who lives in another part of the state . He dropped a calf off at the processor ( first one he's every taken for processing) last week. He was told by the processor that the time required was proportional to how fat the calf was. I've never heard that from a...

If you have livestock, you'll have deadstock...

We found a 12 day old calf dead as the proverbial door nail Saturday morning. Friday evening he was running around with the other calves; Saturday he was layout stiff as board with his feet uphill. :( I swear cows could find a way to die even if you babysat them all day, everyday. On the...

    Respiratory Issues....

We had a steer looking droopy on Saturday. Of course, we didn't have any of the big gun antibiotics on hand. :frowns: We loaded him up and ran him to the vet's. He had a bit of congestion and a temp of 103 but no nasal discharge, running eyes or cough and was not dehydrated. Vet hit him with...

    Long lines

We took a trailer load of calves to the sale barn in Decatur after church today. I think everyone else had the same idea- we waited in line for 40 minutes to even get on the property. It was another 25 minutes to unload. Haven't seen lines like that since 2011!

    Biblical rainfall and feeding hay....

We've had almost 20 inches of rain since the first of September. This has me thinking ahead to feeding hay in these conditions. At this rate the mud around the hay rings will be 3 feet deep even moving them every time we feed. What do y'all do to mitigate the mud issues when feeding hay in the...

    how to identify bermuda grass????

We recently purchased some property that has a hay meadow . There's some bermuda grass in it. The problem is I don't know if it's common or improved of some sort. It's started growing since we've finally had some rain here. At this time there's noseedheads yet. Is there any easy way to ID...

    First step in weaning...

was accomplished last night. We brought the pairs back to the home place yesterday evening. Hopefully by this weekend, we'll be able to separate them. Then, let the bawling, wailing and gnashing of teeth begin.

    Flies

We've had some rain in the last few days ( Thank you, Lord). Now the flies have gone from practically zero to a gazillion. We were checking some pairs in the east pasture yesterday evening. They had probably 250-300 flies per cow! I had checked them about mid-week and found just a few flies on...

    Nice morning temp

It felt like fall this morning when I let the dogs out - 64 with low humidity. Very nice after the crazy hot weather lately. Now if we can just get some rain.

    Found a cow dead...

in the hay meadow this morning :( . I don't have any idea how she died and there's not way to tell at this point with the 105+ heat we've had for the last week. I saw her along with her calf with the other cows/calves on Wednesday. what bothers me is the gate to the hay meadow was open. We...

    What a blessed Sunday!

We had an awesomely blessed Sunday afternoon. We had two different storms blow through, each dropping over an inch of rain. What a way to start July off. We've been so dry - 3.7 inches of rain in May and only .5 inch in June. Talk about answered prayers! Thank you, Lord!

How soon after worming can you see an improvement?

I was talking with a new neighbor. He is new to the country and livestock in general ( cows in particular). He has a couple of yearling heifers that aren't going as well as he would like. I asked if he had wormed them; when he responded no, I suggested that he do that first rattle out of the...

    Expired pour on question

I found an unopened jug of Cydection ( expiration date 011/16) while cleaning out a closet. It's been a climate controlled area since I purchased it. Do you think it would still be effective? Or has it lost some of it's potency? I hate to get rid of it if it's still good....however, I also don't...
