    What is your commute?

My commute is 40 miles each way. I try to time it so that I don't hit too much Dallas traffic. It gets stressful having enough daylight hours in the winter. I get used to doing chores in the winter by flood lights.

    CMA Awards....

I too was quite disappointed with Big and Rich. Their lyrics are awful and so id their music. I'm not sure what is country about them. Give me more of George Strait, Alan Jackson, Randy Travis, Rascal Flats, etc.

    Cattle Trailers

I don't own an aluminum trailer. Mine is steel and I wish I had an aluminum. Maybe next time. I do know several people, though, that have Barrett aluminum trailers. http://www.barrett-trailers.com/gooseneck/livestock/ They are built very well, come with a ton of standard features, and are some...

    Who's not feeding hay yet?

We are feeding hay already this year. The grass has been good but we are recovering from 7 years of drought. I have reduced my stocking rate significantly trying to get the grass to recover.

    Got a Texas question....

Transplant to Texas and I won't live anywhere else in the country ever again. I am a first generation cattle raiser and have learned most of it the hard way.

    Using Horses

We cup our hands and "MOOOOO" to get them running up. They can hear us from quite a long distance away. It is embarrasing though to stand in your pasture and moooo when others are with you. They look at you like you lost your marbles.

    The Wives' Cars

  I had to laugh with your response. I can totally relate to the Christmas tree freshener that doesn't quite keep up.

    help on limos

It is best to test any breed information you get here with what you can find in other places. One person may tell you they have an awful temperament and others may tell you they take them to the grocery store on a leash. Check out the web and the breed association site. Focus on what you need to...

    The Wives' Cars

My wife drives the big truck and I get the smaller 3/4 ton. Her's is a 2000 F350 XLT Crew Cab Dually. Mine a 1999 extended cab F250 work truck. Both are diesels.

    2005 Ford Super Duty

I always wait 2 years and get one with low mileage. I let that person take the depreciation hit and I pay a fraction of the new price. If you have excellent credit, your interest rate will be very close to the interest rate on a new truck anyway. Then I drive them till they die.

    Off the farm occupations

I am a senior manager of a group of web programmers. Don't like the work anymore and am studying to take my Texas Real Estate exam. Looking for something to give me more time to ranch.

    Advice

I'm not exactly sure why, but a garage is constructed quite different than a pole barn or a metal barn. The garage has studs 16" on center and so on and so on. Your barn would have completely different requirements. We looked at a garage and quickly went with a barn due to the cost difference...

    Sup-R-lix

Being mostly a weekend rancher, we use the tubs just to make sure that everyone has a better chance at nutrition. I do get out 3 times a week to feed cubes so the consumption of the tubs is not that quick. They are expensive and add significant cost to my program, but I like it for the insurance...

    Insecticidal ear tags

We switch on a calendar year basis. If I have to reapply tags, I reapply the same type that year. Seems to work great for us. Just take the tags out when the flies are gone in the fall. I have heard that a weak tag builds fly tolerance to that type of chemical.

How many cattle to make a living?

I know of one person who does it with roughly 250 head of cows. It is tough for her because she hires a full-time ranch hand to help with all of the labor.

    The Next Ford Super Duty

The problem with the Dodge's is not the engine, it is the rest of the truck. Dodge's are notorious for transmission and differential problems. Also when you hit 150,000 miles, you better take duct tape and super glue with you on every trip. I've got a good friend who has a Dodge with 250,000...

Anyone want to see my bulls?

Nice picture. I could never get my cows to line up like that and look at me all at once. It must have taken a while to produce that picture.

    AI prices

This one varies significantly based upon the services performed. If you are going to do heat detection and take the cow to the vet at the proper time, there is minimal cost. If you want someone to do heat detection for you, costs go way up because you are paying for days of boarding also. If you...
