    Calf table discussion/opinions

I am looking to buy my first calf table due to age and ease on my body. We have always either roped off horses or roped off ground and got down to business. I have looked at the powder river, priefert and a few videos on the stockman calf table. We run 100 or so currently, but in the near future...

    Frustrated!!

So some of you know my wife and I run a cattle operation in the Texas Panhandle. But I also have a family business that I have ran for better part of 25 years. I have a residential and commercial construction company. Back in the late '80s and through the 90s my dad could not leave a job without...

    Molasses as anti freeze??

Like many of you, I am going around breaking ice in stock tanks in the -28° windchill. Someone told me this morning mixing molasses in the tanks prior to freezing temps will act as antifreeze. Said the water will get slushy but would not freeze. Has anyone heard of this or done this with...

    Selling Fall calves tomorrow!!!

We have decided to haul our fall steer calves to sale barn tomorrow. Was going to keep them til fall this year, but the outlook for the fall here keeps getting more uncertain. The last 3 weeks here have ticked up and up. Weighed the steer Saturday and we were pleased with the weights. 40 Steer...

    WOW... What a change!!!

Looked at local sale barns last night, and couldn't believe what I saw. Last year same week, showed 1825 head run thru and sold. Of that number 832 steer calves and yearlings, 687 heifer calves and yearlings with remainder being pairs, cows and cull bulls. This year 255 head run thru and sold...

To hold them or sell them ...

Good morning all. I wasn't sure where to put this, but here goes. We have a group of steer and heifer calves from a fall herd we weaned recently(we always keep our heifers). We typically wean the steer, get them straight and sell them. We have had a drier winter than most and now are getting...

    Lost a good one today

At about 4:00 today our longtime Vet here passed. He was battling cancer for the past 10 years. One of his sons has been in college and going to Vet school. He graduated October of last year. He held on long enough to see him graduate and take over the business. He was one of those people that I...

    Winter Feeding

I know everyone here has there own way or tweak on feeding during the winter months. So e due to geography, others because... Well... That's just how granddad did it lol. Total non opinionated post, just curious with this cold shot of air that plunges into the country from time to time if it...

    How good it feels...

So, I've had a project in my bucket list (and in my head) for about 3 years now. I wanted to change a fence line layout behind the house and barn to accommodate a nice fishing pond and rec area for the family, grandkids and friends. Well at the cost of $15k/mile (doesn't include materials), to...

    LOOOONG Labor

Have a 5 yr old cow that had a water bubble visible yesterday about 9am when I fed that group. Happened to drive by about 2pm and same thing. Got horse saddled and pushed her up to the chute. Checked her, and calf is presenting correctly. Cow hadn't dilated much at all if any at this point...

    Nutrition = +Results

Im not an expert on nutrition in cattle operations by any means. However, in doing a lot of research in our grasses, soil, vaccinations etc the past 2 years and a little tweaking with mineral and feed, I believe we have really gotten on top of preparing our cows for breeding. We began by giving...

Do not like NFL OT Rules

First let me say this... Not a big fan of either KC or NE. Why would the NFL think it's good entertainment to see 2 teams score equal points to go into OT, all to see one team not even have a chance to get their offense on the field. To me it robbed a great game of a great finish. Just my opinion.

    Prayers

Hey all, just asking for prayers for my family. My uncle 52 (I'm 48) has been transferred to Tulsa ccu. He is in bad shape in a multitude of ways. Paralyzed from waste down, kidney, liver at 25% etc. In surgery now. May have a broke back or tumor on his spine. Not sure. He has a benign tumor on...

    Pneumonia!!!

Found a heavy bred 5 yr old cow dead yesterday. Had the vet come out and we did a necropsy on her. Everything looked good, including the full term calf she had. Got to the lungs and there were signs of pneumonia. Vet says it looks like she was trying to calve, and just got down and in distress...

Had a question need some input

I have a partnership that ends at the end of January 2019. I care for 34 cows and 2 additional bulls on a 50/50 calf share. We are set to wean that group on the 19th. My partner asked if I wanted him to take everything when we wean and 1/4 of my half of the calves vs me keeping his cows on hay...
