    Your Thoughts and Advice

A registered Angus producer has annual sales. He states that he guarantees all cattle sold and stands behind them 100%. On the lots that he's selling on the bred cattle, he has listed what the cow was AI'd to, due date, and the sex of the calf. Now, you purchased a particular cow with the...

    Testing Baleage

For those that have and use baleage in you operation, when, or do you, test the baleage? I'm guessing when you start to feed to the cows but am concerned if the results were to come back as a low quality feed. This is our first year trying baleage and have wrapped about 150 rolls.

    Growing out Heifers

Decided to grow out some heifers this year to put back into the herd. Just wondering your thoughts on how much feed per day should be fed daily to get heifers to ideal weight for breeding. Currently around 600 - 625 lbs. Heifers are grazing on semi moderate grass but want to supplement feed...

    Sprayer calibration - 15 or 20 GPA

I've always sprayed at 20 gallons per acre. Recently had a farmer tell me that he always sprays at 15 gallons per acre. Using less water and the mix is a little hotter. He has faster and better results with this setting. Never thought about this but can see his point on less water and having...

    Registering a DDC Angus

Quick question. Was told that AAA no longer allows any registration of offspring regardless of which parent has the DDC genetic condition. I've looked on the AAA website but can't find any proof of that. Does anyone know if this is a true statement? Thanks

    Express Ranches Sale Monday

Been reviewing the bulls that Express will be selling on Monday. Leading off lot 1 is Stallion. Nice looking bull with good numbers (if you're into numbers). Need to see video to get good look at this bull. Any predictions on what this lead off will go for? I'm guessing $250K easy maybe $300K.

    Sulfer Blocks

Can someone tell me about sulfer blocks for cattle? Tractor supply has them and a friend of mine says his cattle are really going through these blocks. I'm just curious to know what else other than sulfer and salt these blocks have and the importance of these blocks (if any). We keep good...

    Triple 17

At a recent morning coffee table, the topic of fertilizers was introduced. To get to the point, it was mentioned that triple 17 is only good for 3 months after it's spread. Never heard this but didn't argue as did the others that were attending. Your thoughts please.

    Hay with High Toxins

Can someone explain to me how hay obtains high toxin levels (or direct me to a link)? I'm new to the hay business (just obtained a 30 acre hay field to lease) and wanting to make sure that I don't over do the fertilizers to create bad hay. I've only been raising cattle for three - four years...

    Supplementing Feed with Hay

I was recently discussing hay and feed costs with a couple of guys. One of the guys said that he read that 3 pound of feed is equal to 50 lbs of grazing forage. That he was going to feed 3 lb per cow once per week. Has anyone else heard of this and what are your thoughts?

    More problems........

Well, the drought hit us hard this summer. Fed hay from May to first of August. We finally started getting rain and our pasture greened up. Now, we are overcome with armyworms and pasture is worse than ever. Back to feeding hay again. One problem goes away and another starts.

    Cattle Feed

We're supplementing feed along with hay this summer since hay is very slim and the weather here in Ga is extremely dry. We're feeding a 14% protein general purpose feed that is made and supplied by a local feed yard. This general purpose feed has a the small pellets mixed in with a lot of...

    Registered Cattle Sales

Been watching a few online cattle sales (angus) and even been to a couple this spring. With the prices that some of these cows sell for, I have a difficult time understanding the reasoning behind this. One half interest at $100K or even higher??? But what I don't get is looking at cow A from...

    American Made

Looking around for a 55 - 65 HP tractor. John Deere - made in India; New Holland - made in Turkey. Are all tractors in this HP range made outside the US?? Unless I get into the larger HP tractors for row cropping, then the tractors are American made. Haven't checked Case or Massey yet. Any...

    Angus Bull EPD's - Docility

Looking at buying a bull soon and just looking over the EPD's of some registered Angus and have a question concerning docility. One showing a DOC of +29, 3% and the other has DOC of +8, 75%. I'm thinking the last would be the best tempered bull but not sure if I'm reading this info correctly...
