Red angus or red baldie heifers?

So the HerefordXRed Angus would be the better option? Is it the 3way cross? Been trying to scrape what I can together to try to buy the straight red angus late May/june. The Herefords won’t be ready until Oct/nov which gives me more time and be selling my own calves then

    Steer stuffer worth it?

Mine are commercial cows using simangus bulls. I agree with genetics. I can’t honestly say I know the daily gains, I don’t have scales, although it’s on the list of things to do/buy. Putting steers in or out seems like just as much work as hand feeding. I was talking about a gravity flow feeder...

    Steer stuffer worth it?

I’ve always bucket fed my butcher steers. I see guys on Facebook etc talk about steer stuffers. I can see the appeal to less labor but not sure it’s worth it. Never used one. Currently I hand feed all they’ll eat of commodity mix and limit them to 10-15lbs of hay a day. I realize Facebook...

Red angus or red baldie heifers?

Can’t say I’m a beefmaster guy but I can see their appeal. Also I need a “one size fits all” bull. I don’t have a large enough spread to run different pastures. I use 2 bulls to tighten calving and insurance hopefully against injury. I realize there’s little guarantees on the 2 bull idea. My...

Red angus or red baldie heifers?

Awhile back I posted asking about selling off and replacing with top quality red angus herd. Ended up buying 12 bred red angus/red baldies, kind of happy medium between risking it all and moving a diffferent direction. That’s the back story if you missed it. So a good friend of mine has offered...

    Wrong but consistant

Wow, around here we don’t have many that do ultrasound and come to the farm. Regular old glove for this area. Anyone used the blood test to preg check? Accuracy? Website(cattlestatsllc.com) says is 99.%. I have used them before to BVD test, good ppl to work with but never used the preg test. It...

    Wrong but consistant

Our vet says anything under 45 days is tough to tell and once they get closer it’s a bred but not sure if it’s 7mths or tomorrow kind of thing. He’s fairly new taking over for our old vet we loved. But old vet has been at it long time, happy to see him enjoy retirement. Sold cow couple weeks ago...

    Cattle chute neck bar ideas?

I appreciate your offer, this is what makes this page so awesome. A lot of experience from different areas of the country in all aspects of the industry. But I went ahead and bought the Filson brand head holder. I’ve learned you often get what you pay for but 1300 and fab’ing my own mounts VS...

    Cattle chute neck bar ideas?

So I bought the Filson one which is same brand as my chute. Welded 2 tabs on and installed couple weeks ago. Used it first time today to implant older steers. Worked very well. No pics of calves in it but here’s after install

    Thermal/night vision?

So after posting this. Last night my wife wakes me up, she’s light sleeper….me not so much. My blue heeler is going nuts. Strays dogs are back, so I snuck out the front door with the scoped/ mini14. Caught this lab mut cornering 2 of my 850lb butcher calves. Sadly first shot missed, he was...

    Retaining heifers?

Lucky did actually but I think his reference was to some people have the theory of selling out when prices are high and buy back later when they fall. My point was that it’s a good theory but is a gamble if you have payments and it takes longer than you thought

    Retaining heifers?

It will work out. I’m not concerned about making payments just curious how everyone saw it. Someone mentioned selling out and buying back in when it bottoms out. Again that’s a gamble I’ll not take. If I sold out, 3yrs all the herd money be gone and still have a mortgage to make. Market might...

    Thermal/night vision?

So we had always had issues off and on with dump dogs. We live about 3-4miles out of town depending where you want to say town starts. Couple times now I’ve woke up to dogs running my butcher calves. First time I ran them off not realizing what was going on. Now they take off and can’t find them...

    Retaining heifers?

That’s why I say I’m not a big gambler. The gamble there is that the cows last long enough to pay it off. Honestly my mortgage is about 10yrs left. Runs 17k/yr. Most years there’s enough calves to make it plus some. Last couple there’s extra but I’ve used the extra to replace old cows or replace...

    Retaining heifers?

Ideally yes. I’m not huge gambler and try to keep herd semi current to avoid those larger turnover years. Sadly the low years have taken a toll and I needed to add youth this year. A lot of 2014 model cows in my herd that I know are nearing the end of their stay. Most have been my best cows...

    Retaining heifers?

Ok so I’m looking at heifer retention alittle different it seems than some. My cows have been paid for for years. But we pay for all the feed, hay, equipment out of pocket. In turn we sell calves every year to pay the mortgage. Years calf prices are low, we sell most all of them except few...

    To much protein?

Yeah I switched them to long stem hay and they’re up to nearly 20lbs of feed. I know better than to feed that much protein, just got caught up in using that extra protein I guess. It’s not my first group, been doing this on my own 10yrs, just tried something different this year. Grew up showing...
