    Mixed cover crop study

This study is interesting in that it claims that root depth in mixed cover crops is more uniform and thin. https://phys.org/news/2023-09-agriculture-crops-mixtures-unexpected-results.amp

    Summer break

Slipped on some wet silage tarp with algae this morning and broke an ankle. Looks like an 8 week break for me. Any suggested cattle/farm/ecology reading?

    Calf not nursing

Another newborn not nursing question. Had a calf born this evening that stood but never nursed, just dancing around cow. Suspect longer labor as cow looked like she was ready this morning before work. After two hours got momma and calf in barn, still not nursing. Tried bottle feeding...

    Fescue Toxicosis

I did a stream exclusion program 18 months back through Lord Fairfax SWCD. This was all well and good except the cattle cannot get to water to cool off from fescue. They end up creating mud pits for themselves and look like pigs. Its worse yet because we rotationally graze, moving every 3...

    diarrhea and blood after worming

I used Ivomec pour on on cattle two days back. I noticed today that one three month calf that is lethargic and on closer inspection see blood in stool and some diarrhea. Eyes are still good though. Could this be from treatment? Its been rough out - cold snow and rain - so want to stay up on this.

    Barenbrug fescue seed

I am going to be drilling in some modified endophyte fescue in the next week or two. This is to fix up a very spotty planting I did this spring. The seed man is pushing Barenbrug's E34 fescue. Anyone have experience with that? Other alternatives are Pennington and Martin.

USDA hay production vs AUM numbers

The family land doesnt ain't working out and we are looking at farms across VA (and toying with moving to MO, lol) I am trying to use the USDA soil survey site to help compare and go beyond what the owner says the land will carry. You can run numbers on the USDA site for both hay with results...

best place to buy dairy farm

I am looking to farm and have been considering dairy as the best option (over stocking). I am debating, among other things, the type of milk to raise. I have a friend who is has an organic farm milking over 200 head and has done quite well, so have thought about organic. I have also thought...

    Dairy Lagoons

I have been considering buying a farm. Many of the farms for sale now are dairy and some have lagoons and some do not. Those that dont tend to be older, and have a simple pit. This leads to my question: what is the alternative solution to a lagoon? How is the manure collected otherwise...
