    Remote operations AI Breeding

Good morning all, It has been a very long time since I have posted, but I am currently working on a research project for my senior year at college. This question is directed towards ranch operations that are in more remote areas. Around us, if we have a cow in heat, we can call a breeder and he...

    Corral Panels

I'm loking at finally installing a set of cattle yards, and I need suggestions on panels to use or avoid. I really liked the panels I saw around Australia, but so far I haven't been able to find anything like them. They are oval and made of hollow galvanized steel. M&M Stockyards was a very...

    What's it gonna take...

The bull has absolutely no white on him, so he isn't a carrier of spotting. A solid red bull will only throw solid calves when bred to solid cows.

    What's it gonna take...

I'm just a little ways north of Rochester. I'm thinking the price per unit would need to be around $50, but we haven't gotten all the costs figured out yet.

    What's it gonna take...

Here is a picture of his dams udder, so you all know I'm not just full of "be nice" She isn't the flashiest/prettiest cow in the world, and she probably wouldn't win a class in Denver, but how often do those pretty females actually go off to become great cows? She's functional, honest, and...

    What's it gonna take...

I think I may have found a bull in Australia that would do a good job in the US, and I'm wondering if anyone else agrees that he looks intriguing. He is 4 years old, has done a great job on commercial cows, and has proved himself worthy of breeding registered cows. His dam is 11 years old and...

    Calf Changing Colors

Thats only true if one or both is homozygous black. If both are heterozygous then you can get red that stays red. Red to red will always be red however.

So what impact does breed Vs. feed have on beef flavor?

My dad talked to a guy who finishes his jersey steers on lentil screenings the last 60 days or so instead of corn. I haven't seen the carcasses, but supposedly it turns the fat as white as snow. I would replicate his process to see how it works, but locating lentil screenings around here is...

What Breed do you think this cow is?

She's a little too light colored for a shorthorn IMO. She looks more like our red angus sired heifers that are out of a HerfxHolxJersey. One is a short and chubby lil thing that raises NICE calves, the other is kinda leggy with decent calves. So I'm gonna go with her dam being a blackxred angus...

What it takes to register cattle

Agree with Muddy. Buy good quality registered cattle because average-low quality will just be an expensive train wreck. And Tamarack summed up the shorthorns pretty well. You don't HAVE to weigh them, but it is definitely recommended so that you have some data behind the cattle you sell. That...

    Chianina

You can register whatever you want. But the National Shows say minimum 6.25% in order to show in the breed class.

    Chianina

That would be interesting, and I'd love to see the offspring. In regards to the comment above, the minimum percentage to show chi is 6.25% I don't really know what you'd get out of the cross though.

    Calf Changing Colors

That would be the plan... but that doesn't mean I'm not curious about what to expect.

    Calf Changing Colors

I've got a similar scenario with 3 embryo calves. Cow is black, but shorthorn sired (so red carrier) and bull is a red roan shorthorn. The one I raised last year was solid red (white on underline) and now I had 2 more this year. Both are red with white underlines, but one has black around the...

    Opinion?

I agree with what's been said about a live calf first time. I'd maybe try I-80 on the 2nd round, but I don't think he will fix her rear third. He'll add look and a nice front, but I'm doubtful he will put enough butt on her to be competitive, and if you get a steer... well there's always next...

Good feet in the Angus Breed

I think most of the non Angus people have left, with few individual representatives of other breeds left. I don't have much experience with purebred Angus, although I will say we've used a bit of Rito, and Net Worth, and both have cleaned up the nasty feet in our dairy cattle. Are they perfect...

    Cows Sure Can Hide Calves

I learned a couple years ago that as long as the cow isn't worried, I'm not worried. If a cow loses her calf, or it wanders too far away, she'll let you know by pacing along the fence. I've learned 2 exceptions however: cows with twins will often not fret if they still have 1, and I'd be nervous...

    When you're in trouble

Could always show her in the cow/calf ring!

    high quality herd fast?

Another way to get a high quality and uniform herd fast (possibly a little cheaper than your scenario, but still not "cheap") would be: Buy yourself a really good proven donor cow, invest in sexed semen (or use Reverse-Sorted with IVF) from a really good proven bull, flush the crap out of her...

If you were picking a heifer to show?

I like 3, but in the pic it looks like maybe she bows a bit on her top? You can sometimes work that out, and it could just be the angle. The pic on 5 is tough, but I could see potential there. When it comes to show cattle, you can fix a lot of things with hair and feed, but you'll never get...
