    Darn coon hunters again!

Their dogs woke me up at 1:30am this morning with a coon treed just 100 yards from my house. The SOB's where shooting at it! My house is in plain sight. I grab a spotlight, go out on the porch and light them up. They see me and then proceed to nonchalantly walk across the pasture 50 yards from...

    youngest heifer to calve??

I just had one calve at 18 months. Looks like I had a fence jumper somewhere. DNA test on the calf I guess to see if my herd bull jumped the fence. This heifer was checked in October as I was running her through the chutes with the rest and checked open. I was surprised to see her bagging up...

Little HOSS aims, shoots and SCORES!

Little HOSS just turned 8 a few days ago. Saturday he got a nice birthday gift. His first deer. A nice fat doe for the freezer. He was sure proud of it and I am proud of him. He made a difficult shot out of the wrong side of the blind. The hit was too far back but he didn't get squeamish on the...

    Dont get complacent

Spent some time at the hospital last night. Saw a new calf in the field. The cow was a veteran cow and always has been gentle after calving in the past. I went to check her ear tag number for my records. I got about 20 ft away when she charged. No head shaking, no glare nothing. She knocked me...

    Critique Time

Ok I haven't thrown one up for critique in awhile. This is a March born calf out of a Balancer bull (CTR Goodnight son). He is a 50% Balancer. His mother is out of In Focus. I don't have EPD's yet so all you have is his looks. He weighed 797 lbs as of Wednesday. No creep just milk and grass. He...

    coyote kill

Lost my first calf ever to coyotes. It was a 3 day old bull calf out of a heifer. A pack of coyotes started going crazy about 2am about 150 yards from the house. My dogs were going insane barking and growling but are in a fenced in yard. I could hear the heifer bawling and carrying on. I grabbed...

    Deal of the century

I have been very busy and haven't posted much but I had to share my deal of the century. I went to an estate pre-sale of a man who passed away a few months ago. He was a tool junkie and had a work-shop full of tools. The family was selling everything. A guy that works for me is a friend of the...

    One....OK, Twice.....really?

Three times? How can this be? I have a 3 year old Red Heeler that is a tough SOB no question. I have seen him take a kick from a cow that knocked hide and hair off of him and he gets right back up and at them. I have seen him take on two of my neighbors boxers at the same time. He weighs 40 lbs...

    Back from Europe

I just got back from 9 days in Europe. I went to Germany, France and Austria. I must say southern Germany was beautiful but Austria was absolutely breathtaking. I drove through the Alps. I could see myself living there. I spent a couple days in a town called Flagenfurt not far from the Italian...

    Odd birthmarks

Anybody ever see a birthmark like this? This heifer has had this mark since day one. I thought it would go away but it has just gotten more pronounced as she has grown. She is about 20 months old now.

    Can't decide on these heifers

Both of these heifers are around 10 months old. My original intent was to keep them but I have been made an offer from a customer that is hard to pass up. Both are registered, average EPD profiles. Both are 75% Balancers. Pictures are not the best but I think both calves are pretty good. Sell or...

    solar or battery lights

I built a roof over my handling facilities and I would like to install lights for night work. My problem is that it is not possible right now to run conventional power to that area. I am thinking either solar or battery power with a solar charger. Any experiences in this area? How long would a...

    need some euros

Looks like I am headed to Germany and Austria in June. I have been to Germany a couple times but never to Austria. I can add it to the long list of countries I have visited. Probably going to France on the weekend to Metz to see where my uncle Walter won a silver star at in WW2.

    lead poisoning

This afternoon after church I saw one of my momma cows in labor. Sitting with 10 ft if her was three black vultures. About 5 minutes later two of the three just fell over dead. The third flew to a tree at the edge of the pasture and wouldn't you know...he fell dead too. not sure of the cause of...

    made the cut

This gelbvieh purebred bull calf made the cut and didn't get cut. He will be a year old at months end. On some feed but not excessive. I will weigh him when he is a year old. I'm guessing he is about 1,000 lbs right now. I think I have him sold as soon as he has a BSE completed.

    Another great is now gone...

My 89 yr old uncle passed away this morning at 6. Hard worker, family man and all around great guy. WW2 vet, 2 purple hearts, 2 Bronze Stars. Survived Normandy, Metz, Saarlautern, Saarbruken, the Bulge and dozens of other battles. Still had slivers of shrapnel from a German 88 working its way...

    new old truck

Finally got another truck. Been looking for ever. I found an 09 Dodge Ram 4 door 4x4 with only 53k miles. Like new condition. Old feller really babied it. Feels good to be back in a full size truck.
