    Darn coon hunters again!

My biggest heartburn with the matter was not the dogs crossing onto my property. Dogs cross all the time and as long as they don't chase cows or calves I don't mind. The shooting right outside my back door at 1:30 in the morning, the shorting out hotwire and leaving it that way and climbing over...

    Darn coon hunters again!

Their dogs woke me up at 1:30am this morning with a coon treed just 100 yards from my house. The SOB's where shooting at it! My house is in plain sight. I grab a spotlight, go out on the porch and light them up. They see me and then proceed to nonchalantly walk across the pasture 50 yards from...

Do you lease your land to hunters?

I'm on the other end of the stick and I will tell you it is difficult at least in Middle Tennessee to find land to lease. I have been leasing in Kentucky but cancelled out for 2016 because it was too far to drive to hunt weekends. I was only going for one week per year. Add lease fee, hotel...

    308

Yep. I am so used to the vintage actions that I am super careful when ejecting a live round. I have one in 6mm Remington that my grandfather gave me. I love that rifle. It is a standard sporter barrel but it will hold it's own with my varmint versions in the accuracy department. I have shot many...

    308

Hey CB, I am hoping you feel better about the killing power of the 7-08 these days. It sounds like the round is growing on you. I have one in a Rem Model 7 and it is one of my all-time favorite woods guns.

    308

I have a pretty long list of Remington 700's. I like the ones built up until the late 1990's and I snatch up the late 1960's models when I can find them. The ones with the steel butt plate. I do have a new Remington 700 Heavy Barrel ACC/SD in .308 which I mounted a 4 x 14 Burris on. I hate the...

    youngest heifer to calve??

I just had one calve at 18 months. Looks like I had a fence jumper somewhere. DNA test on the calf I guess to see if my herd bull jumped the fence. This heifer was checked in October as I was running her through the chutes with the rest and checked open. I was surprised to see her bagging up...

    My Bull Ain't Worth It

I used to hunt this area some years ago and got permission to hunt several pieces of private land. I think I know this rancher or at least met him. The name is familiar. I know the road and the area. What a tragic story.

Little HOSS aims, shoots and SCORES!

Sort of an optical illusion. The gun slid over when he picked up the head. It is actually to his left and passed him. And of course it is unloaded. Thanks for the concern! :tiphat:

Little HOSS aims, shoots and SCORES!

Little HOSS just turned 8 a few days ago. Saturday he got a nice birthday gift. His first deer. A nice fat doe for the freezer. He was sure proud of it and I am proud of him. He made a difficult shot out of the wrong side of the blind. The hit was too far back but he didn't get squeamish on the...

    Got Docked at the Barn

Sounds like he is grasping for excuses. My Gelb calves and Gelb crosses that I have taken to sales have all topped the sale here in TN. I don't know why there would be that much difference between here and where you are at.

He is sold and gone but not too far away. Might be able to get some pics if I happen to drive up that way.

    Dont get complacent

I had a fiberglass sorting stick. I hit her hard across the face when she charged. She didn't even flinch and I am 6' 245lbs and no weakling. She did the first assault and then ran across my body, spun and charged back. In this time I was highly motivated to gain my feet and I beat her to the...

    Dont get complacent

Unfortunately Dave this was on a gravel lane.....not much give. I did eventually get her tag number. Number 71. I'll remember that one in my sleep. She had a bull calf....found that out yesterday. I'm going to give he a few days and see if her hormone levels go back to normal. If not she will...

Tux, I think your tag line summed it up for me about as well as it can be said.

    Dont get complacent

Spent some time at the hospital last night. Saw a new calf in the field. The cow was a veteran cow and always has been gentle after calving in the past. I went to check her ear tag number for my records. I got about 20 ft away when she charged. No head shaking, no glare nothing. She knocked me...

Remember the old days of deer hunting?

I started hunting deer in the mid-70's. There were darn few in Tennessee at that time. I shot my first at 6 or 7 years old using an old Remington 742 Woodmaster in 6mm Remington. Seemed that all I needed was some old coveralls, old galosh boot covers and a stump to set on. Started bow hunting...

His momma cow has produced some very big weaning calves no matter what bull she was bred to. This calf was moderate at birth. My records show a 78 lb birth weight. Her offspring seems to moderate out pretty well. The other bull that I sold out of her 3 years ago weighs about 1,800 now.
