    RIP again

Years ago I worked for a retired school teacher that had him in her first grade class. She said he was the class clown and funniest kid in the school even at that age.

    Santa Gertrudis crosses anyone ?????

My experience over the years with Gerts is that the real payoff comes with the 2nd and/or 3rd cross. I've bred a lot of Gert cows to Hereford bulls resulting in weaned calves with just average market value. The advanage comes from retaining the best heifer calves and then crossing them to a...

When this is over, I would like to know where they were all taken.

I guess I give people too much credit

Talk about the CAB getting ridiculous. Saw in the store the other day a can of Alpo dog food with an official looking seal on it which said 100% Angus Beef. I'm sure the old hounds out there can tell the difference. (didn't have phone with me to snap a pic).

    Time to building another herd!

If I was to start a new herd in my small part of this world (the mid south area), I'm thinking I would want a cow herd of 1/4 Hereford X 1/4 Gert X 1/2 Red Gelbvieh then use a good Black Angus, Red Angus, or Charlois terminal sire depending on the market for black, red, or yellow calves. This...

    winner "Gone But Not Forgotten"

My cousin told me his dad sold it about 10-12 yrs ago to some guy that wanted to restore it, but he thought the guy never did and parted it out and sold the rest for scrap.

    winner "Gone But Not Forgotten"

I submitted the first pic. That was my grandfather's 1938 McCormick-Deering Farmall F14. The first tractor anyone in my family ever owned. He bought it new in 1938 for under $500. so I've been told. It was just one step up from a team of horses. It had about 15hp, hand brakes, no PTO, no...

    Young Replacement Bull Prices

The price the breeders are asking and the price the buyers are willing to pay are two different things. High quality bulls will always demand higher prices and lower quality bulls will always bring lower prices, and it has nothing to do with the cost of raising them. It's all about the...

    Interesting study on organic foods

Just like the C.A.B. All hype, promotion, and marketing. No real substance to the claims made.

    Do It Yourself

I'm with you on that. Saw a bumper sticker the other day that read,"If we'd known grand kids were this much fun, we'd had them first". Pretty well sums it all up.

    Bermuda grass experiment

My choice for northern bermudagrass would be in this order: 1. Ozark - Most cold tolerent, Most production. 2. Tifton 44 or Midland 99 - About equal in cold tolerence. Tifton 44 may produce a little more. All are hybrids and have to be sprigged. Would not consider any others. Even if the...

    Rain, north from Isaac.

Started raining Thurs. 5:00pm. Moderate steady rain all night & all day Fri. Thunderstorms one after another Fri Night & Sat. Total rainfall = 9.25 inches. Most of it came slow enough to soak in. Grass already looks greener.

Store bought vs home raised eggs: boiling

Have a friend that claims he fixed this problem by adding oyster shells to his laying hens' feed. Don't know if it really works, but he is a very trustworthy fellow. I've gotten fresh eggs from him an never had a problem peeling them.

    What would you do?

I would meet him only if I brought as many local residents as I could that share your concerns (i.e. witnesses). If he gets mad and nasty, get him to threaten your livelyhood (which he has already done) in front of witnesses. At least you'll have a basis for a lawsuit and proof if anything...

    cow efficiency

To a large extent most producers are already indirectly selecting for cow feed efficieny by selecting for milking ability and mature weight. Milking ability directly correlates to lbs. of calf weaned, and mature body weight directly correlates to lbs. of dry matter consumed. The real question...

right grasses for pasture in ky

Ozark bermudagrass seems to be the best bet for the northern half of the transitition zone, which includes all of KY. It is a hybird and has to be sprigged. It is the most cold tolerent bermuda grass and was developed and released around 2005 by the Universities of Missouri and Arkansas, OK...
