    How much is too much?

There's a wide array of cattle care and handling that I see in my area, which got me to thinking, when is it enough or too much interference with their care? My neighbor is on one side that only looks at his cows when he needs money from his calves. Never pulls his bull, and just weans a...

    Older Semen Tanks ?

My tank is a 1979 model and still holding strong. I see no reason to get a new one yet. My rep told me they don't make em like they used to.

condensed distillers solubles through a lick tank.

+1 on the stuff freezing! Also if it sets for a couple days idle it'll settle out and you'll have sludge in the bottom of your luck tank and liquid on the top. I have personally used this stuff where I used to work so I do have experience. We got this stuff hot and pumped it pretty well but...

    Poly Bale Feeder

What if a bale gets dropped on them from a loader? I feed with a bale bed or loader over the top of my feeders. I'm not talking about dropping from a great distance but sometimes I can't get backed all the way to the feeder so I set it on top of the feeder and it rolls inside.

    Planting a winter crop

Stocker steve got me thinking on the grazing corn post. I have 4 acres that I winter cows on and calve them out before taking to grass. I have been planting corn/soybean rotation every year and run hot wire to let them clean up stalks. The field is getting compacted pretty good and the corn...

    Retaining Calves

I gotta ask....how do you graze standing corn? Seems like there'd be a lot of waste by doing that. I've got the perfect place to graze some, that's why I'm asking

    need some tree cutting advise

Could you stuff an old inner tube in the hollow spot real tight and light it on fire? Might burn hot enough to help it fall. I would stuff it tight though, and light it at night so the black smoke doesn't alert the EPA.

    Could calf be dead?

I don't see how they can hide a calf in 6in tall grass in an open field but they sure do sometimes. I drove my pasture three times one year only to find it out in the open, couldn't see it until you were right on top of it.

    Fresh vs. Pond Water

You guys are comparing "fresh" water to pond water? I don't get it? From what I've seen, the pond water is the fresh water! Around here there's so much chlorine, chemicals to clean the water supply, that my cows won't hardly drink it! I can understand if your talking about "well" water but...

    How has the stockbarn changed

I think it's just a write off now. They might sell 100 head or less a week.

    How has the stockbarn changed

Many years ago our local sale lasted 5 hours or longer, starting with pigs, sheep, killer bulls and cows then feeders. The sale barn owner got in a bad habit of waiting till the bidding was hot and heavy, then they'd bring their own stock in the ring and sell them until the bidders cooled down...

    Chopping corn

I've seen where guys line up hay bales on the sides and for a wall in the back to help keep it all together. You can spread rock salt on top to help it crust too. Probably 2-300 lbs for a pile that size Bigfoot.

    Seeding down $2.50/bu corn fields?

I thought our government did away with the CRP program, but maybe that's a state by state thing. The only thing they pay on now is buffer strips around creeks or wetlands and I think it pays well. I think it will take 2 years of $2 corn for people to seed down pastures again but the feedlots...

What kind of netwrap are you using?

I've been using Pritchett net wrap on my Jd 535 for the past 4-5 years because it's cheaper and it's heavier than the ambraco that Jd sells. They come in different colors so you can "color code" your hay from year to year so you can tell how old it is. They also make a cover edge wrap too. Might...

    Bale trailer

Just point the truck/trailer down hill if you can and block the wheels on the truck. Let gravity help you. Fresh bales are lots easier to load also. If you get too many bales on the back end the trucks rear tires have been known to come off the ground and the truck can roll. I usually put mine...

    m&w hay rakes

I've got the 4565 rake and what I really like about it is if your windrow gets wet, you can pin one side up and just flip the hay over with the other side. Real handy! Like others said once the teeth start breaking you'll go thru a lot of them. Don't go cheap on teeth either, the name brands...

Different meanings for the same thing

When Miley Cyrus was dancing on the music awards with that referee they called that a "twerk". I've used that word every day after lunch, when I tell my wife " I better get back twerk". Apparently it caught on and movie stars are calling it a dance.

How do you test your hay to know its ready to bale?

Are you crimping your grass hay or laying it flat with a disk mower or sickle mower? I've been laying it flat and letting it lay for a day then rake/bale on 3rd day. I've often thought it was dry on 2nd day but I never baled it that quick for fear of bales getting hot. 2 years ago in the...

    Hay Season 2014

We just had a hard frost 2 nights in a row, so that will definetly hurt everyone's hay around here. At least what hay ground that hasn't been torn up, and farmed. More grass is being killed every year here. My brome/fescue is about ankle high and getting heads on it. Luckily I had plenty of...

heifer doesn't want to claim calf.

Put some vanilla extract on the calf and a little bit on the heifers nose. She should start licking her calf off.
