    Black hided vs others

Blacks still bring a little more, regardless. That said, it's not unusual anymore to see the Faux blacks docked at the sale, especially when it's really obvious / ridiculous. One thing I HAVE seen in the Texas Panhandle is quite a few more herds of red cattle, mostly all red, but some running...

    Drones to locate new calves?

Thanks to all for the input. Lots of stuff to consider, for sure. Like 50/50 Farms mentioned, trees aren't a big problem on my place. The next tree I find here will make '1'. I THINK I could find a calf looking down into the tall grass, but no way to know until I try it. I'd also think the...

    Drones to locate new calves?

A lot of my pastures are primarily Old World Bluestem, about mid-thigh tall and pretty thick. It is sure hard to find new calves laying down in the stuff. Walking any distance is sure enough a chore, plus you almost have to step on one to see it, and you sure don't want to be trying to drive...

    Composite Decking

Had someone put in a new west side front porch 12 years ago that gets a LOT of sun on it. It is some kind of composite - maybe Trex? Still looks almost new, is solid and strong, and have had no problems at all with it to date. Porch post pillars are wood and have had to paint them twice plus...

What kind of dog is this?

Why, that looks like old, old 'Old Yeller'.

    Large bander recommendation?

In the past I used a California bander. It worked very well for me and there were no 'surprises' later. I have banded yearling bulls with it for a neighbor, and the procedure went off without a hitch. I've found that for these bigger cattle it's better to work from behind, with them head...

    Large bander recommendation?

I used a California bander for awhile, and had good luck with it. I have banded yearling bulls for a neighbor, and everything worked out fine - no problems, no surprises. I've found banding these larger animals is best done from behind while the bull is head caught in a squeeze.

    Opinions about the california bander

I've used a California Bander for the the past 3 years, and have real good luck with it. Works like a charm for medium to large bull calves, but the smaller XL bander does a better job on little calves. I agree with what some have already said about being a little easier to work from the side...

Anyone have any experience using the rotary calf table by Filson?

    Sale Terminology

Thanks ~ I appreciate the info.

    Sale Terminology

Can't believe this info isn't already here, but I'm not able to find it on any of the searches I've run. I've seen some terminology regarding cattle sales that I don't understand, and I'm sure lot's of people here know the answers. (1) running age cows (2) 100 pairs - short solid and aged...

    fencing cost

what is a stinger? Concerning fences, it's local terminology (probably wrong) indicating the shortened third leg of a brace or corner. It's sunk 4' into the ground as all the posts are, but only sticks out above ground 6" to 12" in height. Just past the second leg the top rail is notched on...

    fencing cost

Around Amarillo, TX the average cost is $8,000 per mile for: 5 strand barbed wire (12-1/2 ga. OK wire), 400 (+/-) T-posts, 3-1/2" steel corners, extra stretch post on the 1/2 mile and one steel pipe gate opening (2 steel H-braces with a short "stinger" brace on each end. This is for flat land...

It could be worse ... (to Jeanne - Simme Valley)

That's for sure. Nothing worse than French calves, except maybe a baby French fish! Wait - that would be a french fry, right? OK. . . they're cute.

    Angus Temprament??

Some breeds DO tend to be a little more excitable than others, but generally Angus - black or red - aren't included there. Still, a lot depends on the genetics, and then the environment, of the individual animal. Usually, people classify Herefords as tame, and so they are - mostly. When I was...

    I've got 40k and a desire...

Some good advice already given here. I hate people moving around me, but the Texas panhandle (or, someplace similar) is somewhere you should consider. It has some available land that is more affordable than most, and jobs to keep you afloat until you no longer need need the help. Amarillo is...

    EPA

The EPA is the EPA, to be sure, but we always have to remember that no government agency or bureau, including the EPA, is really permitted to set its own agenda. Ever. That is conveyed in no uncertain terms to the agency head via "staffers" whose discrete, but close oversight insures each...

    Rain !

I don't usually say anything much on the board, but it's raining outside here (just south of Amarillo) and this is the first rain on this place since back in July. Not much of it then, or before then, either. Most of our winter wheat has evaporated, EVERYBODY is feeding cake, and I've got a...

    Test Well

Yes, sorry, typing too fast. 4" = typo. I'm refering to what around here is a normal run of the mill production well with 6" casing for a house, windmill, livestock water supply, etc.; and not a big irrigation well. And I know the answers to all those questions for my 3 existing wells. But I...
