    Hay production down 40 percent

Quality has been good, but the one field we do normally does 220 round bales, this year only did 172. And now it's dry as all he77 here, burning up the ground!

Can you get worms/parasites from cattle?

Called my vet, say he's at lunch, which means he's gone for the day!

    Bottle or Bucket

I've done them both ways. I prefer bottle with younger calves, and then bucket break when it seems appropriate. No navel sucking with my calves in individual pens, I can raise 10 at a time, and bottle feeding really doesn't take that long. BTW, I'm not wealthy and I have a nurse cow. Jersey/Hol...

    Shameless Plug.....

A very good friend of ours brother recently published a book. I just finished reading it for the second time. Quite the story of overcoming a disability. Overall an easy read, and entertaining. Of course, after the Gov got wind of what he did, they were none too pleased! Check it out...

    Thanksgiving Humor, Part 1

Thanks a lot, coffee shooting out my nose!

Whens it too cold for a new calf to be outdoors?

In my expereince, the yo-yo temps are more of a problem than anything, as you would know here in SW MO. 50-60 degree temperature swings are really hard on young calves. I have a climate controlled barn I raise all my bottle calves in, none go outside until weaned, but not everyone can do that...

Greetings with a cow down :(

Shot of Nuflor, Draxxin, pick one, shot of Banamane, shot of B-Vit, and get his body temp up, even an old blanket, etc., immune system won't work with low body temp. Make sure to keep hydrated. Seen it many times.

New found marketing tool at Holstein auction.

Borderline "abuse" is the norm at most of the dairies around here. The one I work at I would consider "fair", as far as overall conditions, I've seen MUCH worse. It's all about pumping as much milk as possible, conditions be damned! As far as the Holstein steers, some people just do a better job...

    Guernsy Meat?

Did a guy a favor (he needed money, badly) bought his Guernsy steer about 450# for $200. Never dealt with these before. Meat good/bad? He's in great body condition, hasn't missed a meal, you could say. Any input from the meat gurus?

Animal protection efforts have unintended results

The whole article just goes to show how stupid some people are. If that happend to me I would be PISSED! Like I always say, "Stupid humans". As an aside, a buddy of mine had a calf that the cow hid so well it took us 3 days to find the little booger. I swear we walked that pasture a hundred...

bottle feeding 2 or 3 week old calf

As far as I'm concerned, I'll never be an "expert", because everyday you learn something new when dealing with cattle. Without sounding "woo-woo", I spend a lot of time "learning" my animals. Time well spent as far as I'm concerned.

bottle feeding 2 or 3 week old calf

Let her decide how much to eat. Some calves, especially smaller ones can't quite handle a full 2 qts at a time. You may have to spend a little extra time feeding in "cycles" with her, but if she remains vibrant, healthy, etc., she'll let you know. The grain/alfalfa isn't doing her much good as...

bottle feeding 2 or 3 week old calf

Not sure where you're at, I give mine mid-day electrolyte bottle (1Qt). Honestly, I would tube feed as much as it takes. I just fed a little bugger I got in on Fri., was on a cow, and he finally realized the whole bottle "thing". Do 2 full qts. if she's a big calf, break it up 1qt at a time if...

bottle feeding 2 or 3 week old calf

Take the water away. If it did come off a cow, it'll be a couple days to get used to the bottle. If its healthy it WILL get hungry. It also helps if you have more than one calf, I usually put the problem one like that in with a bit older calf, they learn quickly what the bottle is for. IMO, if...

    question about scours

Doesn't sound like worms. Pudding consistency is a good thing, make sure to electrolyte, scours doesn't kill the calf, dehydration will. Shoulda used a shot of Excede. Instead of regular electrolytes I use Diaque, works like a champ, but a bit $$$.

I give cows bread and now they will not leave me alone

Be very careful, yes, a more tame cow can be just as dangerous as a crazy one. I can usually just slap their noses/asses to get them away while feeding or working, but I'm dealing with Holstein milk cows that are just big babies. My steers on pasture will come when called with a bucket, but...

    7.3 diesel F250 99

Cam position Sensor was recalled, should be free at the dealer. I bought an extra one because they have a problem going out at the worst time, easy to replace, just need a deep 9/16 socket (as I recall). #8 injector is ALWAYS the one to go out on the 7.3! Chronic problem. I believe there is a...

    Dead Calves in Heifers

That is correct, all AI'd, moved into the calving pen about 2 weeks prior to due date. Calves were small, as usual for first calf. Computer matched AI-ing. I'm leaning toward Lepto, although everything is vaccinated. Weather has been opressive the last week or two, may have an effect? Hopefully...

    Dead Calves in Heifers

Honstly, the dairy is about "buns-up" right now, so owner's attitude is one of disinterest. All feed is always tested on a regular basis, as I'm in charge of that, so I don't think that's a problem. This isn't really my "department" there, just happened to be there on a skeleton crew day, and...

    Dead Calves in Heifers

Yeah, OK, they weren't "virgin" heifers...First-calf-heifers...Ok.. they're not mine I just work there, but the boss today said he doesn't want to spend any money on postops, or checking any of the rest of them, so I guess he's a big gambler? The vet just shrugged his shoulders, and seemed...
