    bizarre weather

I'm sitting here watching the snow fly and hearing the wind howl. We hardly had any snow this winter and have had more snow and rain this April than all those months. We desperately needed moisture so I'm not complaining but I never remember ever having snow this late. I'm fairly certain we will...

    foreign exchange student

We are picking up our German foreign exchange student on Friday. We are getting excited as we have never had one before and hope it goes ok. I'll have my own two in high school now too and hubby thought it would be fun. He is familiar with farming so that's good. He wanted to play soccer but...

    county fair tomorrow

The fair starts tomorrow. I don't particularly enjoy it but the kids do. I think most counties have some quirky or weird thing that defines it. Our sheep show has the rule that everything gets sheared on the same day ( around the beginning of June) and you cannot touch them again ever or you...

    hay price

We paid $175/ton for old crop prettydecent grass hay. Alfalfa is bringing $200 and up per ton. There were 100 loads for sale and a whole pile of buyers. We hated to spend that much but just hope it's the high for the year. If it doesn't rain soon it won't be....

    watering :(

Started watering the punkins this weekend. We haven't had rain for weeks. They still look good (much better than the field corn) but there isn't much chance of rain in the future. We hooked a 1250 gallon tank on to a flat bed and we can do 3 or 4 rows with a tank. We hope it'll hold them till it...

    fresh pork

My son decided to show pigs for 4h this year so we bought 4 from a friend. They grew too fast for the fair so we brought 2 to the locker. They bought one and we kept one. We haven't butchered a pig in years and it sure tastes good! Chops on the grill and ham slices. Gonna try the bacon this morning.

first game of the season today

Daughter ( just finished 8th grade) has her first softball game of the summer today. She'll play shortstop so I'm sure she will see action. We've been practicing quite a bit and we got her a new bat -it's a composite material that sure works better than aluminium. I'm glad she likes softball, i...

speaking of libraries- fav book or author

I love to read and so does my daughter. I probably average a book a week. The genre I like the best is suspense/thriller/action type books. Carl Hiaasen, John Sanford, Lee Child, and Robert B. Parker (just died last year, he wrote the Spenser books that led to the TV series with Robert Urich)...

sold some bred heifers yesterday at Dunlap. We had bought 9 SD Angus/AngusX heifers last spring to fill a pasture we share with our neighbor. We wanted herfs but we didn't have enough replacements ourself. Sold one of the 9 b/c we didn't like her and 1 was open when we pregged. Bred to our easy...

    a new avatar?

Went to the Iowa/Minnesota game this weekend. Unfortunately the team didn't show up. :help: Minnesota has a beautiful new stadium. It was a little chilly, but not windy so it was ok. Went to the Penn State/MN volleyball match too. Was going for Penn State and they lost too! (Those chicks are...

    before and after

We had 3 hail storms this year. The first one hit the house and roof pretty hard. So we now have a "new" house. I was thinking the carpenters were too slow getting it done, but between the green wrapper and finished siding we had another hailstorm as bad or worse. Lots of people that had redone...
