    Holistic management practices

Isn't the point of bale grazing to avoid the cost of feeding hay? I assumed that people that feed this way plan to intensively graze the regrowth on their meadow or field as well as the bales. I have a neighbor that grazes small squares with stockers and cows. He will turn 500 or so stockers...

    which float for water trough?

JRG Can you run an Apex valve off of a hydrant that does not set over the tank? I know, why would you have a hydrant that did not set over the tank? They were existing when I took the job. I have to run a hose and be able to attach the float to the side of the tank with a bracket. I am...

    which float for water trough?

I use the 1" Hudson Valves and the metal mounting bracket. The only place I have been able to find the valves and brackets are Valley Vet. You can buy them on their website. They also have a disc that allows them to have continual flow with out full output during the winter. This will be the...

Cleaning up rotational grazing paddocks in late fall

Jim, Looks great. What a testimony for rotational grazing. I'd like to see someone try to argue with those pictures. Grass is in excellent shape, cows maybe even better. How long have you been using your system and what kind of planning system do you use? I use the Savory System. We can...

The USDA’s Grain Inspection, Packers & Stockyards Administration (GIPSA) has proposed an amendment to the rule requiring scale testing twice a year (“approximately” every six months), to the new proposal requiring the first test between January 1st & June 30th and the second test between July...

    Downed Cow

My experience is that she probably either has a really big calf in her or a set of twins. The calf or calves are putting to much of a draw on her system. Once she calves she will be fine. The main concern is how close she is to calving. I have seen calves that are probably 3 to 4 weeks early...

    high tensile wire unroller

I can get you a good unroller through my distributor. I have put in lot of high tensile fence and really like this unroller. It is easy to adjust so that the spokes fit your roll no matter what diameter. It has a tensioner on it to prevent any back-lash or free spooling. You can set it in...

I just noticed: Traditional vs. Non-Traditional Ranching

I believe that maybe progressive and non-progressive would be the proper terms. What is traditional in one area is not in another. The fact of the matter is that in order to survive people in agriculture have evolved ( progressive). Those that have not evolved (non-progressive) sell the ranch...

    Calving

Now that there is some debate going. Some of you tell me how you make your smaller operation sustainable. Looking for any new ideas. I would love the opportunity to get out on my own, just can't see how to make it work here. Land prices are high and so are bred cow prices. You can't run a...

    Calving

Most of the people that live here make there living exclusively ranching. Yes there are some smaller outfits. Small here would be between 150 and 350 hd. What is the average herd size where you come from Red Bull Breeder

I wasn't trying to offend any one. Just was not what I expected to see.

    banding questions

It seems to me if you want the best value out of your calves and you want to sell at this time of year you need to band earlier. I have ranched all of my life and have seen calves banded and litterly thousands knife cut. I can tell you that I do not know a single buyer that wants to buy calves...

    Calving

I am supprised at the herd sizes that I in the post I read on these forums. I would not know what to do with my self if I calved less than 500 hd. Cows were bred to start calving Aug. 2, we had 520 in the first 28 days.
