    thinking out loud

I am a seedstock producer that focuses on carcass quality. Some of the things other producers say against breeders striving for quality are: 1) Pounds pay , carcass quality does not bring them extra dollars. My reply) They are right unless you have a market to sell quality beef. Sale barns...

What do you think. . .? How does. . .??

Doc may be I'm missing the question to. Here's what I do to determine possible bull candiates (AI or natural) 1) Spend hours studing pedigrees and any production records that I can get my hands on. This includes my cow herd and prospective bulls. 2) Determine what I'd like to improve within...

So you want to buy top of the breed cows?

Those are old pictures , late 80's early 90's cows. I'd like to think that phenotype and productivity has increased since then. The pictures are not very well done either. Cows in the winter and in muddy conditions seldom make good pictures.

So you want to buy top of the breed cows?

I made a error in how many Dam of Distinctions Star Lake has had. They have only had 4 Dam of Distinctions. The other ten cows that have the Star prefix were not produced by Star Lake.

So you want to buy top of the breed cows?

Show cattle rarely make highly productive cattle.

So you want to buy top of the breed cows?

Phenotype alone does not make a cow a Dam of Distinction , however it is very important because if you do not have correct phenotype then you have some flaw in the productive capitability of the animal. A example would be to narrow in the hips would cause increased calving difficulity. This is...

So you want to buy top of the breed cows?

I agree with your statement jkwilson. How many Dam of Distinction does Monte raise each year? Very few of his cattle ever make Dam of Distiction statis. I looked it up for you. Monte has only had 1 Dam of Distinction in the last 10 years. Star Lake has a total of 13 in the last 20 years.

So you want to buy top of the breed cows?

Dam of Distinction and correct phenotype are good starting points for qualifying as the best.

So you want to buy top of the breed cows?

Do you want to buy top quality cows? :?: :?: :?: I mean do you really want top quality cows? :?: :?:  What are you willing to pay for the best? :?:  If you want registered and you want top quality expect to pay over 5000 dollars each.  :o ...

    Registered or commercial Hereford

 So if a registered cow is offered for sale at a price of less than 2500 it raises a red flag meaning that she is inferior? I 've heard others in the registered business say something very similar. I suppose that I should never sell any registered cows under 2500, if you...

    Great Prices???

Show me the expenses to raise these steers, then we will determine how much money was lost or made.

    Great Prices???

WRONG!!! With inflation and the ever increasing cost of operation, prices for cattle is still way below what they should be. May be we as cow calf producer can survive ( many won't ) , however at current prices we can not keep the farms productive enough for future generations of our children...

    Leasing Land Your buying..

Stay away from the 16 acres, it just is not enough usable land to do what you want. If you only want to keep two horses and may be a few chickens it will be ok. If you really want to raise a few cows then you will need the 29 acres at a minimum. LFF
