Here's a black bull for ya.

For some clarification, we have 100 angus cows and 25 angus heifers, give or take 10 depending on the year. We bred only 30 of them to Anchor. Of those 30, if my records are correct, there was four different sires in the pedigrees of the cows. So hodge podge, bad choice of words. My mistake...

Here's a black bull for ya.

"Hodge podge" was referring to that the cattle do not all stem from the same pedigrees. In the past we have matched up the cows to what we felt was the best bull to fit the cow based on EPDs and looks, if that meant AI-ing to 5 different bulls, that is what it we did. When we used Anchor...

Here's a black bull for ya.

I wasn't saying he wouldn't be a good bull for someone else. He just didn't work with our genetics. We've used other OCC bulls sired by Traveler and the calves came out just fine. For some reason, Anchor just didn't work.

    What's that supposed to mean?

drug labels do they mean anything?

Every plant I have been to (swine and beef) has had a USDA inspector there stamping carcasses while they are processing meat.

    feedlot pregnancy

We bring all the cows who have calved into the barn for 24 hours as soon as the calf drops (we check every 2 hours). The calf gets to rest for a while depending on when it was born. The calf then gets shots, weighed, tagged, and if need be, banded. The process takes 5 minutes tops, and I have...

    Feedlot Back charging

In that case, if it's custom feeding, yes charge if its in the contract. If not custom feeding, no. The cattle industry is a gambling game, as a feedlot owner/manager, you're gambling with deaths or pregnancies if you buy heifers.

    Feedlot Back charging

What exactly do you mean by dead animals? How long in the feedlot before death? Custom feeding or not?

    Beef Judge

That's as bad as our state fair last year. A kid got reserve market lamb and when he got his ribbon, he threw it down in the wood chips and walked out of the ring while the judge still was talking. He didn't shake the judge's hand when he was selected reserve either.

    Donkey...

I am wanting to break my donkey to ride, but can't find anything as to an acceptable age to start. He's two years old now. Anyone have any idea when I could start?

    Best Dog for Cattle?

I will be moving away from home in a few months and am planning on getting a puppy. In the past we've had blue heelers for cattle dogs, good dogs but didn't listen well. We recently got a 3/4 australian shepherd 1/4 blue heeler, he's in training but looks promising. I was wondering what you...

Here's a black bull for ya.

Not that I've noticed. We had a Northern Improvement cow chase my sister up the fence and not let her down tho (funny sight, the cow didn't bother me at all, I stood there scratching her  ). We haven't had any of our angus cows being particularly nasty, just the snort and head shake, but...

Here's a black bull for ya.

Oh man, we have such a hodge podge of genetics in our Angus herd right now. We used OCC Magnitude on a couple cows last year, got some really thick (for angus) heifers out of him, about a frame size 5 or so which was a little on the small size (we like 5.5-6). We also used Dr. J Analyst but...

Here's a black bull for ya.

As the description on the bull said, "He will continue to be the best bull in the breed to change large framed, lighter muscled and structurally incorrect cattle. He even outperforms his sire, 6807, in this ability. Anchor daughters are moderate framed, very efficient females with great...

Here's a black bull for ya.

Haha, when they looked that bad we didn't even check EPDs before they got sent to the feedlot.

what do you think of my show heifer

is the heifer not standing on even ground or does she really slope to her front like that?

    Beef Judge

Around here, there are judges who judge for only club calf traits or judge the animals for the breed or for market. The ones who only look for club calf traits get a lot of heat from the purebred breeders who show hereford, angus, charolais, etc. In a breeding heifer show, they want the heifer...

Here's a black bull for ya.

We used him a few years back. Bred him to 30 cows. Only kept 5 heifers out of him, and they haven't produced anything decent. All the bulls were banded and sent to the feedlot. Never again will I use him. And we culled based on appearance.
