First Time AI Bull Selection Sanity Check

I always select bulls by phenotype first... and then select for EPDs if they are important for some specific trait(s). The people my steers and heifers sell to shop with their eyes before they look at papers... and I've seen some pretty sorry looking animals that have great EPDs. It's easy...

I was getting them after the change. Been gone a few days and now the alerts for watched threads seems to have quit notifying me. I'll check my profile but I don't believe I ever changed anything except the darker screen. Yeah... just looked and the preferences seem to be fine and just like...

Rather than starting a new thread... what's going on with the notifications for followed threads? Is anyone else not getting their notifications for watched threads? Will this reach a moderator?

    Thought on chiangus

The only Chi cross I've had personal experience with was half Chi from a Gert/Char cross cow. Big, beautiful, fertile, docile, and weaned a big calf from an udder that was hard to even see. First calf was 825# at weaning. The cow matured at 2000#. LOVED that cow... except she twinned every time...

Post a pic of your bull

Yeah, if the droopy ears were normal he's be a higher price... and I think that's a smart buy. He's the best of the three. Number two has too much of a feminine head for me, but that seems to be a trend and you get it by breeding for calving ease, I suppose.

    Chased a bull today.

No way to come out on that bull, at that price, as a commercial bull. When I think about the number of animals I sent to slaughter as steers just because they were commercial... and they would have looked every bit as good... it kinda makes me sick. I believe in using the best bull you can get...

Cows are bunched together in herd

If you'll click on your profile, top right... and scroll down to Account details... you can enter a location so we all know and don't have to ask continuously. Sounds like a nervous herd with a predator problem...

CRISPR technology to bring back wooly mammoths by 2028

And Troglodytes... What we're gonna do right here is go back, way back, back into time. When the only people that existed were troglodytes... Cave men, cave women, Neanderthal, troglodytes. Let's take the average cave man at home, listening to his stereo. Sometimes he'd get up, try to do his...

Buying Feeder Calves vs. Momma Cows

And I'd be offering less because it's a better business decision. But we don't have to agree on that, either.

Buying Feeder Calves vs. Momma Cows

@bauerlivestock ; I'd say it's unreasonable, even for good stock. No one asks that much over market unless they are thinking they have a fish on the line. And that's fine for them and makes a good story if you survive it. The good, local relationships you want are the ones that ask too much...

CRISPR technology to bring back wooly mammoths by 2028

I wonder how long it will be before we start bragging about "bringing back" the seagull or rat or cockroach. We can't take care of nature as it is...

I like him. In the states we always seem to go to extremes, so around here he wouldn't have enough depth, he'd have too much leg, and too much apple butt. But the people in the states that crucified apple butts didn't know enough about what they were doing to do it well, and in some places...

5 week old bottle calf is bloated.

Do you have a healthy cow? Give her some saliva from the healthy cow. They get saliva from being licked by their mothers and that's how their gut microbiome develops. If they don't get it, they have a harder time.

Isn't this a Park White bull?

Pretty neat lookin' out in a field if there's a group of cows and calves. But I've only been around a few and not really closely and they don't seem real friendly and of the few they didn't seem to be great mothers.

Tooth knocked out - Round 2

I've never known anyone that worried about a calf losing a tooth. I suppose it might be something, so I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt.

    Long horn butchering.

That doesn't make sense to me. If you could write it again in a different way it might be understood better?
