Where do you put your profits?

No absolutely not saying you have to cheat. My unfair advantage is I live in coal country and I have access to many great neighbors that let me graze reclaimed coal mines for free or little of nothing. Due to my location and set up I have a great jump start to profitability compared to someone...

Where do you put your profits?

What you will notice is people that make good profit on any venture, they're taking advantage of something they have ample amounts of already. They're really good at exploiting their unfair advantage whatever that may be. You will also notice the people with all the purpose and no profits are...

Where do you put your profits?

Yeah most people around me are equity builders and not profit producers. They run their farm like a start up business and pile all the money back in to the farm. Not a bad idea as long as you’re not buying anything that depreciates.

Where do you put your profits?

Just like the headline says. What do you put your cattle profits in to? What has been the most effective money you have spent? For the longest time I put mine in a low cost index fund and that proved to be a solid strategy. Now even the stock market seems top heavy and not a very good value. I...

Retaining Heifers in a Hot Market

All of ours is mixed breeds, colors and what I would just call good solid cows. We buy strictly on phenotype. If she looks good and the price is good then she is a good cow. As long as we've put the the right bull with them our calves have consistently been very close to top of the market. That...

Bale grazing vs Fertilize for Pasture Improvement

What are you guys using to unroll your hay with?

Retaining Heifers in a Hot Market

I don't want to come off and make it sound like I haphazardly run my operation and am just chasing money. With our size heard and farm in Southeast Kentucky comparing me to different areas across the country is not really apples to apples. I do have a plan. I am 34 years old with a 5 year old...

Bale grazing vs Fertilize for Pasture Improvement

So would there be any value in broadcasting an annual like rye on these areas?

Retaining Heifers in a Hot Market

With prices being what they are instead of keeping back heifers and increasing my heard it makes more sense to me just to sell and create maximum cash flow while the prices are high. Then after as prices start to fall increase my heard back to max capacity. What is everybodies plan going forward...

Bale grazing vs Fertilize for Pasture Improvement

Is there any reason not to spread as much lower quality hay as I can on our pastures? I can get older hay for very low prices around here especially after last years bumper crop. Probably not nutrient dense but maybe just for the organic matter? Low quality seed bank but at this point I'm trying...

Bale grazing vs Fertilize for Pasture Improvement

Also would it be worth while to try and overseed some red clover over this ground in February? If so would you overseed before or after the hay is fed out?

Bale grazing vs Fertilize for Pasture Improvement

I would say there is about 4-5 acres that need serious rehab and organic matter built up. It is south facing and burnt up pretty much with no real leaf cover other than broomsedge. What would be a good number of bales per acre you would unroll to maximize good nutrient coverage?

Bale grazing vs Fertilize for Pasture Improvement

So I am on year two of my pasture improvement project. My journey of trying to rehab some seriously overgrazed and depleted land. Last year I focused primarily on stocking rate as well as a better rotational program and our pastures responded very well. This year I have budgeted out a certain...

    3/4 Ton Truck Recommendation

The way truck prices are now you can get a Ram Cummins diesel for less than the other 2500 series gas engines. I'm not sure what makes more sense money wise.

Any opinions on the Chevy 6.6 gas with the 10 speed transmission?

    3/4 Ton Truck Recommendation

Any sense in looking at the 6.8 since its basically the same engine as the 7.3? I like the idea of the 6.8 or 7.3 due to the simplicity of the engine. Whatever I get I will drive it until it basically falls apart. I don't like buying and changing vehicles.

    3/4 Ton Truck Recommendation

Looking to upgrade trucks from my single cab 2012 F250 6.2L. Family and farm are both growing so I'm needing something with more room but still able to pull and work with. Got 197K miles on my old Ford and the only thing it's ever needed was a fuel pump. Reliability has been excellent. I'm...

Stirring the pot on the LH/corriente topic

I just really don't understand how selling corriente crossed calves would be unscrupulous. If you buy a head cow at the same sale you take the same exact chance. You're buying without knowing any history or if they have had health issues. If I get burnt on a cow trade then that's on me. It's my...

Stirring the pot on the LH/corriente topic

One of the very few things I have done right in my 18 years owning cattle was bought a group of longhorns. Calved them out, then sold them and the weaned calves that fall. They'll make money. I think I actually gave $400 a piece for the heavy breds and $600 for several cow calf pairs.

    Lime Question

Everyone rents it from the local ag office. It will hold around 8 ton or so. Yeah it’s definitely not ideal but we don’t have many options around here.
