    Open heifers

My experience on purchased heifers is maybe 50%retention by age five. I don’t blame you for keeping your own back. Sounds like a broken record, sell down the last few years, time to build back. I’m in the same boat. I would’ve started last year but the site came up with a flaw. So far so...

Another round of storms and heavy rain

I’m in the yellow band, but as greybeard says that doesn’t make much difference. My aunt lives in Owensboro, right in the worst part of the map. They had quite a bit of storm damage three weeks ago, it seems to be an active path through there the last few years. We were in one in the early 90’s...

Anyone use a subsoiler for planting PEX?

I’ve seen copper tubing get eat up in the ground, but not brass. I wonder what’s in your ground that does it.

    Hay Rake

Off subject, but two things… what are the buildings in the background? And nice vw. How good does it handle that bumper pull trailer?🤪

Anyone use a subsoiler for planting PEX?

I'm a snob when it comes to fittings. Get the brass compression fittings that require an insert in the end of the pipe. I'm of the opinion if I'm going to bury it I never want to see it again. I prefer the AY McDonald brand. I hate plastic threads with a passion. I've had to dig up and...

Anyone use a subsoiler for planting PEX?

I used to work for the local co-op, we hand dug grain bin footers back 30 years ago. We had to dig them 18”, that’s the frost line here. We’re nearly on the 38th parallel, in line with the more northern parts of Kentucky.

    WTB: Porta Hut farrowing huts

In addition to the porta huts we also used round straw bales. The sows would burrow a hole in them, the little pigs would lay in the room she created. It was funny in the winter time, she would lay against the hole, the little pigs would be warm as toast inside.

Anyone use a subsoiler for planting PEX?

You might be able to go to your local rural water utility if you have one and get just what you need. I contract operate the one in my county, and keep a 500 ft roll of 3/4 on hand. We would do that and bill you for what you take.

    WTB: Porta Hut farrowing huts

We used to use those before the hog market tanked. I loved farrowing on pasture, healthiest feeder pigs ever! We had pretty much all dirt hogs, did farrow some in bedded concrete pens, old school bus minus the seats made a dandy nursery before moving to a dirt floor barn until they hit 80# or...

Anyone use a subsoiler for planting PEX?

I figured your frost line was deeper, I assume it’s the three feet of snow on the ground that makes that depth possible?

Anyone use a subsoiler for planting PEX?

Yes HDPE. Don’t buy the old “black roll”plastic, it’s not nearly as durable.

    Cheap Hay

The price on the better stuff may have gone up, I don’t try to keep up on them. I buy most of my hay, can’t fool with it at those prices.

    Nitrogen from stunted clover

Just posted this on another thread. It was red clover that was used, but yes you should get a decent N credit with even stunted crimson, it fixes more than the red.

    Clover Galore

We have a lot of very light soils in this area, outside of the river and creek bottoms. Before the advent of commercial fertilizer, folks sowed red clover for feed, and would sometimes let it get tall and rank and then plow it under, it was one of the only ways to “build” soil back then. Also...

    Cheap Hay

Seems that 5x6 net wrap fescue bales have been $50 forever here. Smaller twine bales can be had for less. Last I heard a dedicated hay farm an hour north has pure orchard grass at around $70, another place has pure alfalfa at around $70 as well. These both cater more towards horse owners.

    Farmer Wants a Wife

If she don’t want your broke a$$ then she won’t want you financially comfortable either. I can say this because mine has stuck with me through thick and thin, with a lot more servings of the thin. Find one who’ll take you now,as is.

Best Small Lot Fence for Calves

How big? Cattle panels would get expensive pretty quickly. Woven wire with two strands of barb on top is a heck of a fence.
