    Round Balers

The rake has nothing to do with the weight of the bale. Your windrow can be very light or very heavy and the bale weight will be the same. It will just take more feet of windrow to make a bale with a light one. What determines the bales weight is, the moisture content of the hay, the type of...

    planting oats for hay

Be aware that oats are one of the grains most likely to be damaged by freeze. We lost many a field of oats here. We now use rye, wheat and ryegrass.

    Hard udder?

I have never saw an entire bag hard either. Is it hot to the touch? If so then it probably is mastitis

    Round Balers

I had that baler for 10 years. I weighed many loads of hay and none ever weighed 700-800 lbs. My coastal weighed 500-550. Have you actually weighed your hay? If so, what kind and what moisture content?

    Dun

i put the high skid shoes on my JD (kuhn). It does enable me to cut higher. Downfall is that because the blades are more level than aiming down, the cut is not as clean.

Round vs. Square bales...how do you calulate ?

Maybe with your baler. My JD 4x5 makes bales that weigh 750-800. My squares (coastal bermuda) around here weigh 50-55lbs. Therefore one JD round bale is equal to around 15 small square.

    Squeeze Chute

I bought this economy model and it works pretty good. My Angus weigh around 1100 -1300 lbs. If it breaks I have a welder and can fix it cheaper than buying a more expensive one up front.

    mow or not

I don't know what type of grass it is, but coastal will hold it's protein quite a while. As a matter of fact the Noble Foundation and others recommend stockpiling grass and then feeding it through the winter months vs hay. No labor, baling, hauling or storage costs...........

    ear tags

We have been using Y Tex for about 17 years. After about 5 or 6 years they start to fade. Then the plastic starts to get brittle and they end up breaking the stud (usually hangs up on barbwire or a cedar limb).

Pro's and Con's of Liquid Fertilizer

Liquid will rust your equipment. If you apply it at warm temps, part will volatilize and dissapear. Best to use it in spring only.

Livestock Compensation program in drought areas

That was what I signed up for last year. I just signed up and mailed the papers - no supporting data required. With this new one, you must go in the office. I was figuring that it was worth more money

    ranch/farm jobs?

Sell the condo. Save your money. Keep teaching. Go rent a few acres and put a few cows on it. Work in the hot sun, when the baler is busted and you are covered with fire ants. Rain is coming and you can't get the part that you need. Apply 4 tons of EXPENSIVE fertilizer. Watch a huge rain wash it...

    New Vets

You can't read well. I didn't say that calling a vet was cheap. I said that cattle ranchers are too cheap to pay a vet a decent rate.
