    Full French Charolais

We did. Got some pretty good calves from him. But his back feet grew crazy, which the breeder made good on. Then the bull I picked to replace him didn't pass his Semen test....so we got a different bull. Which I think is a pretty good bull. Not the greatest photos...but they're all I have at...

    Ear Tag Brands

We use Y-tex tags in the cows. They are a 2 piece tag, but we have really good retention with them. In the calves we use Z-tag feedlot tags.

Oh, Yeah, the snow is gone. Pretty much on schedule this year, snow melted mostly in mid March, and the grass is started to grow now.

    Managing LBW Calves ?

We've calved a few in really cold weather. Last April (Easter time) we were seeing -30 C overnight. We were done the first cycle by then, but March wasn't real sweet either. This year, when our heifers started (end of Feb) we were seeing those -30's again. And we were having 55-65 lb calves, not...

    Backwards calf

Last year we had 11 sets, lost 4 calves and one set was born in the cold which I am pretty sure is why they died. And we helped 2 sets be born. 1 calf was backwards and one was backwards and upside down.

    Backwards calf

And we rarely have big problems with twins. More often than not, we just go out and find a cow with 2 calves. Out of 3 sets so far this year, 2 were unassisted and one set we helped. Only problem with that set was that the second calf had 1 foot coming up under the first calf. They both came...

    Calving Season Photos

She is pretty sweet, and was a pretty big surprise when she came out looking like that. Her mother has never thrown anything colourful like that before and she is one of our oldest cows. DH wasn't all that impressed

Thanks, Yes, she raises some whoppers, and she's on borrowed time. Same with her mother who is 11 this year. Mom is done this year, her udder was always pretty poor, but she lasted a LOT longer than I thought she would. So far we haven't had to touch either one of them, which is why they are...

Thanks, guys. We have Presort Sales up here...So no...the different colours don't really matter too much. Spots and roans will get docked, unless they are Tan/grey, the buyers don't really care then. Big calves 600 lbs and up, don't get hit too hard either. Those are pretty much all the...

    Managing LBW Calves ?

I don't like those really small calves, sure they have lots of vigor if the weather is warm, but in below freezing temps, they freeze up real fast. A 100 lb calf, you will find him up and sucking, the 60 lb calf will be laying there freezing up. It's a simple matter of body mass and if it is...

    Backwards calf

I've seen about 3 calves born backwards in 20 years. I'm sure it happens more often than we think it does. And, I am sure some of the 'stillborn' calves that are found were likely backwards and the cow didn't finish pushing/get up quick enough and the calf suffocated with it's head still inside...

    Calving Woes

I don't worry about malpresentations happening again in the same cow. I've got the records to back it up. Other than one cow, years ago that had 3 backwards calves, I don't think I've had a cow have more than 1 malpresentation in her life.
