How did you get into cattle business?

Wife had 2 horses so we bought a house with some acreage bordering her folks acreage. I like running and fixing equipment so I bought a dozer and tinkered with it constantly while clearing fencelines and forest. Got to where we had way more pasture and hay ground than the horses could eat it 10...

It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Once we get deep snow here the once frozen ground will thaw out underneath and turn to mud. Only places that stay frozen are where it gets plowed or packed down. I can go out to the middle of untouched snow in February at -30 and dig a hole in the dirt as easy as in July.

It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas

By later in the winter its pretty hard to end up in the ditch here. The snow banks on the side of the road are 3-6 foot tall and solid as a rock. When you lose control you just ping pong back and forth between the snow banks. You get used to driving 60mph and not knowing exactly where the road...

It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas

Our first snow was back in early September. Our first foot of snow was in October. Now December has come and there's only 1-2" on the ground. Strange winter. As much snow as we get 8 months of the year people forgot how to drive every year. First 2 months of winter and people drive 30mph at the...

    Jar the teeth loose

Got one with front axle suspension and cab suspension. It is amazing how much smoother the ride is. Doesn't get rid of all the bumps but it makes them a bit smoother. Haven't started feeding hay yet, but once I do our snow gets deep enough that you don't notice cow pies or anything. Usually...

    Fence line weaning or not

Hot fence charger with 4 strands of fence juiced and 1 grounded. Never seen a calf try to nurse more than once thru the fenceline.

    Tagging the babies

I've never had any luck matching cows and calves up as they get older. Only way for me to knows who's who's is at birth.

    7.3 Powerstroke heat

With a correctly working thermostat both my 7.3 trucks will come up to full temp within 10-15min of idling in the winter (temps below 15 degrees). Usually let either of them warm up just long enough for the idle to smooth out and then start driving. I dont typically leave my trucks idle for...

    7.3 Powerstroke heat

One of my 7.3s thermostats stuck open in the winter. Even with the radiator 100% covered the coolant wouldn't get warmer than 140 degrees while driving, and 160 degrees while plowing snow or hauling a loaded trailer. This yields no cab heat, reduced power, and worse fuel economy. Motorcraft...

    7.3 Powerstroke heat

Thermostat probably failed open. Fairly typical issue with a truck that old. Get a new thermostat from the ford dealership. When the ford one fails it typically fails open (ie low heat), most of the others fail closed (ie overheating).

I've moved, and I have a real job (still no haircut)

My theory on repairing equipment is that somebody in a factory assembled it in the first place (and I've been around plenty of assembly line workers that couldn't change a light bulb) so I should be able to figure it out. Haha Setting pinion depth and backlash on an axle is an art. Know a guy...

How many miles would you go before you changed this oil?

My run around vehicle is a GMC Envoy with a 4L60E transmission. 225k miles and the transmission has never been serviced other than adding a little fluid now and then to make-up for the drips is has here and there.

How many miles would you go before you changed this oil?

Over the years I've pulled oil samples and sent them off to the lab and got the results back in various engines at various mileage/hours. Modern gas car or diesel with good oil 7-10k miles is a-ok. Went 12k miles in the wife's car and sent a sample in, results said it would have been fine to...

Does more pounds per acre make up for being docked at the sale barn for small frame size?

I agree. When grass was all there was it was a "survival of the fittest" type situation. If they couldn't hack it on whatever grass was growing then then were dinner to something. Now people have bred and perpetuated lines of cows that truly can't flourish on grass alone. They need extra...

Does more pounds per acre make up for being docked at the sale barn for small frame size?

It maybe a buzzword but there is something to grass based genetics. Early on I bought a group fancy looking registered black Angus heifers. They came from a farm that had alfalfa pastures, alfalfa hay, corn silage, etc. I brought them here to our native grass pasture and hay. Those girls would...

    2019 F 350 SW 6.2L Tow Report

I liked the 7.3 godzilla until they have started having all kinds of trouble with the lifters and camshafts delaminating. A logger buddy has 3 of them and all 3 have been sitting at the ford dealer waiting for parts as the lifters and camshafts failed at roughly the same mileage. Unfortunately...

Does more pounds per acre make up for being docked at the sale barn for small frame size?

But what if you had a group of 1700lb cows weaning those +200$ calves on the same low quality feed, no barn, etc? The question is then does that cow eat +200$ worth of feed over the 1300lb cow every year? From my numbers on my farm the answer to that question is No.

    1530 Deere

Air in the oil will be millions of tiny bubbles appearing white. Let that oil sit a little while and it will clear right up. Water in oil will be more white and won't quickly settle out to clear oil.

Does more pounds per acre make up for being docked at the sale barn for small frame size?

I think some people tend to lump breed into ever issue they have when the two are unrelated. Like "lazy angus bull". Should just be "lazy bull" as lazy comes in all breeds. Over the years I've had and seen lazy bulls of all breeds and colors. I also hear about "crazy angus" and "docile...

Does more pounds per acre make up for being docked at the sale barn for small frame size?

That bull was only in with roughly 58 cows give or take a few each year. My other bulls haven't been quite that good. But still very respectable.
