Who left the gate open ?

That reminds me of almost 20 years ago when I had sheep, I forgot to close a gate after calling the sheep up to the barn lot for the night. I came out of another barn and saw them in the back yard with the last few stragglers of sheep and lambs coming through the open gate. Panic mode hit, and I...

    Hogs

You right on that it would be a culture shock for sure, I haven’t seen it or dealt with wild hogs first hand, but I know what hogs can do to ground and wild ones running loose going where ever they want is gonna be a mess,

Who left the gate open ?

Just this morning, I went to get some hay, and closed the gate behind me when I left the hayfield. By the time a got the hay put out and got back to the house, I couldn’t remember closing the gate. So I got in the side x side and went back to check. I had closed it but I sure don’t remember it.

    Hogs

@greybeard you are right about loss of agriculture land and the winners and losers as a result. We are seeing that here too, my understanding is most lots sold here have to be an acre for a house and 10 for trailer. Some close to city limits can get zoned for cluster homes as the call them and...

    Hogs

Yeah, hogs are adaptable, I could see them living in the same areas as coyotes and black bear. They might get a real young pig if the opportunity came about but a big hog would too much for either in most circumstances I would think. I think the reasoning behind what the wildlife department is...

Who left the gate open ?

Just glad it wasn’t too bad getting them back. Sone years back I was feeding hay and had the cattle in a lot eating grain whilst I went through another gate to set out some hay. Came through the gate and said to myself I’ll put the tractor up and then shut the gate on my way to let them out of...

    Which bull to use?

I don’t know much about shorthorns, but that’s a fine looking cow and calf.

    Hogs

We don’t have wolves, but have plenty of good sized coyotes, not supposed to have mountain lions in KY, but a couple have been confirmed with one being killed by a wildlife officer. We do have black bears and in some of the areas said to have hogs are areas that have had bears the longest and...

    Hogs

Haven’t seen or heard of any right around here, but from I’ve understood there have been pockets of them west, north and south of us for a few years. The most have been south of here in counties along the Tennessee line. Not looking forward to these hogs eventually spreading to here...

    Bad advice?

I don’t know what “it” is but “it” doesn’t seem logical to me. We ordered feed today and it was down from what it had been. I’ve always heard cheaper corn/higher cattle and higher corn/cheaper cattle, and it went about in a cycle but never hear the cycle talked about now. And with record low...

Where do I go From Here?

Yes, I’m a proponent of the 2nd amendment too, I think sometimes people question that when we don’t allow them to hunt, Sometimes they will try to convince us that they know about guns and gun safety but it’s not worth the risk. Our land is folded up with hills but still fairly small acreage and...

Where do I go From Here?

Bears can be destructive for sure. One fall they must have been looking for food and tore up dead trees and done a number on some rotting fence posts. One evening we were working on fence and my wife kept saying she heard a calf making a funny sounding bawl, I can’t hear so I didn’t hear it...

Where do I go From Here?

@farmerjan several years ago when we first noticed a lot of black bear activity we also had an uptick in coyote issues around that time too, I don’t know if there is a correlation between that like maybe competition for food source or just a coincidence. We have a lot of coyotes, some are quite...

Where do I go From Here?

I understand and agree with the practice of not making excuses for the cattle and culling heavy. We do that to a point. Problem that we run into is that we have a small herd compared to several in here, and since we do cull fairly heavy it’s hard to get built up. Seems like when we cull and...

    Thanksgiving food traditions

I’ve seen a lot of rabbit chasing in different churches, from some preachers. We go to a Southern Baptist Church, I’ve known of our preacher since we were in high school, he has a heart for ministry and does a good job. He makes a sermon outline with fill in the blanks so people can follow...

    Thanksgiving food traditions

I used to go to a church that we were out at or a few minutes before 12 every Sunday. It amounted to a little over 30 minutes of actual preaching time. I jokingly said that there was either a secret trap door behind the podium or a couple of deacons would had a long shepherd’s hook that they...

    Thanksgiving food traditions

My grandmother would fix creamed onions, and my mother did sometimes too. I liked them. That chocolate fudge sounds a lot like what my mother made. I never thought about it, but that’s probably where she got her recipe from too. My grandmother in my dads side was always making mince meat pie, I...
