    well it happened to me!

Happens to everyone. I had one last week was acting a little off one evening. Not off by herself, but just acting different. She was due in 10 days, and I just assumed she would calve within a day or so. I pulled a dead set of twins out of her the next morning. Doesn't matter how many you...

    Transporting cattle about to calve

That is typical to what I do to my fall herd. Bring them "home" about 2 weeks prior to calving. I wouldn't say doing it at that time would cause any more instances of abnormal presentations. I have noticed that moving cows around that are within a few days of calving can sometimes cause...

Sudden death in 2 week old calf

If the vet couldnt find anything, not sure what it could be. However, it sure sounds like the calf got kicked, stepped on, etc. Murphy's law at work here. *hit happens.

Weaning Calves quicker with Best Success

I do essentially the same thing. I also wean with the moon signs. It might be councidence, but it sure seems like everything works more smoothly when the sign is right.

    100% calf crops?

I would think this would represent about 99.9% of cow/calf producers. There is always something that goes wrong. I didn't think there was 100% in anything when dealing with cattle, except a 100% chance something, somewhere along the lines will go wrong.

    Soaking bales with protein supplement?

Even if you add 10 gallon of a 30% protein liquid, you are only adding roughly 33 lbs of protein to a 1200 pound bale. This would be adding 2.5% protein to a bale, keep in mind this is making some assumptions with sime cowboy math. So if it is 4% protein, you might make it 6.5. 2# of dried...

    fertilizing pasture

My pastures have only called for N from soil tests, and I apply 10# of Sulfur every year as well. Sulfur will make for greater use of the available N, and if you apply gypsum to get your sulfur, you will get some Calcium buffers that help with soil PH. Most producers around here only apply N...

    Pay day

444# steers brought $1.93 535# steers brought $1.79 508# heifers brought $1.52 404# heifers brought $1.70 Not bad for only being 6-7 months old! After a little more than doubling the size of my herd two years ago, only one more year do I have to turn a good chunk of that money over to the...

    Pay day

Loading up my group of fall calves later today to haul to the auction barn for the sale tomorrow. The most even group I have ever raise. 75% were born in the first 21 days of calving last year, so they should sell in bigger groups. Only 1 dink in the whole group. A years worth of work for...

how much more hay will cows lactating eat?

If a dry cow eats 4 bales during the winter, a lactating cow will probably eat 6, maybe 7.

Any of those breeds should be a good fit in that environment.

    Weaning weight

Any of the continental breeds would work. I cant see where you are from, but a simmental, gelbvieh, or limousin woul be a good cross. Just depends on what breed(s) are most available in your area. If your cows are pure angus, you should get all black calves regardless if you buy a red or...

    Palpated salebarn cows?

Inconsistent at best. About the only thing one can be certain is if they say 1st stage, it is hard to scre that one up. 45-135 days bred is the easiest to determine length of gestation, after that it gets much harder.

    Butt first feet down

Had one like that this year as well. Breeches are the toughest ones to save the calf. It stinks, but that is the reality of cattle. Hope the rest of your calving season goes well.

    Calving Season?

There are reasons for and against calving in any particular month(s). My "spring" herd starts in late january- march. Fall herd starts mid-august thru october. My full time job requires the most time from the last half of march thru may, and again october thru december. I try to calve...

    Heifer Slipped Again!!

I would say that is your answer. Some forages accumulate nitrates, but not what you have been feeding. There is a reason she keeps aborting, but your best bet is to ship her. She might have an std, trich, tough to say.
