    Age of herd bull

Question rather than a comment on this topic: Does keeping a bull til 11 or 12 have a big effect on the salvage slaughter price compared to a 6 or 7 year old? I recently saw a sound 12 year old bull but he was pretty light due to his teeth being worn down to pretty much nothing. Hanging onto a...

Steer blocking a bull from breeding?

Thanks Ken, I'll have to keep an eye out for that as well. I've noticed the young bull calves trailing behind the yearling bull when he's trying to breed. Haven't witnessed him being slowed down by them yet. Andrew

Steer blocking a bull from breeding?

Thanks for the replies. I hadn't anticipated this being a problem but there's no end of rabbit holes to fall down breeding cattle. Andrew

Steer blocking a bull from breeding?

We have a yearling bull in with our cows at the moment. We also have a bigger older steer which we've retained for the home freezer. A relative commented that older steers can block young bulls from breeding. We haven't witnessed this but we're not there all the time. Is this a known thing...

    Evaluations on bull calf please

I should have specified that in the second picture he is the calf in front. I did have a look at his testicles and they seemed a reasonable size. The process of elinination I used was pretty basic 1.) Want a polled bull so that eliminated one down to 5 left 2.) Visual appraisal. Two were...

    Evaluations on bull calf please

I've kept a registered Red Devon bull calf intact to be our clean up bull after A I later in the year. I had six bull calves to choose from. I ended up keeping the guy in the photos below intact. He's a polled calf a couple of weeks shy of six months in the photos. I don't know his weight sorry...

    Want to move to Australia?

We have huge populations of feral deer in Australia both European and Asian species. There is a plenty of opportunity for deer hunters. http://www.austdeer.com.au/ I think you fellas would struggle with our strict gun laws though. You wouldn't have the range of weapons available that you're...

    USA Holiday

Thanks for all the comments. The kids want to come back one day in summer so they can go to yellowstone national park. HaHa no-one pointed a gun at us that we know about. Obviously the only news we get here about the US in Australia is gun crimes. After a week into our holiday my nine year...

    USA Holiday

Just got back from a four week holiday in the US. Went with the wife and two kids. Had an amazing time. The trip was for my wife's 40th so unfortunately couldn't drag her around looking at cattle. We spent most of our time in the Utah canyon lands but we also got to the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas...

    Real Winter Pics

Love these pictures! Thanks for posting. We're in the middle of a heatwave here in Australia so quite a contrast. It looks magical to me but I'm sure the novelty wears pretty thin for you. Andrew

    video on live carcass evaluation

Here's a video you may find useful if you're a novice like me. It's about 20 minutes and it goes through how to evaluate the carcass on a live animal. What I found really useful was the comparison of two live steers and then the comparison of the two carcasses of both steers. Those of you who...
