Cattle got through 4 rung barbed wire fence. Advice?

I appreciate everyone's input! We are not a big operation. Our pasture is 4 acres. The cattle that escaped were yearlings that arrived 2 weeks ago, so they are new to the environment and still relatively small. I'm sort of an "anything worth doing is worth overdoing" kind of guy when it...

Cattle got through 4 rung barbed wire fence. Advice?

Oh we feed them! Very good hay, cracked corn, oats, and a sweet mix. Twice daily. We pack on the pounds. We are not running a very profitable operation, but the big family pets are happy, at least up until we bring them to the butcher.

Cattle got through 4 rung barbed wire fence. Advice?

Hi all, I'm just beginning year 3 of hobby farming so I'm still learning. Last night at dusk we got the dreaded call from neighbors that our cattle were out. Thankfully not all of them were out and the escapees were grazing close by. We were able to lure them back by opening a gate and filling...

Feed trough inundated by honey bees

Thanks all. I am going to try to feed at night as my first solution. These are definitely bees. They aren't very aggressive. I can run my hand through the feed and even though they are everywhere (100's of them). They pretty just move an inch or two aside go back to their business. I've...

Feed trough inundated by honey bees

Hi all, We supplement feed our beef because we live on sand and our pasture grasses aren't very rich in nutrition. Also, our cattle go to the butcher in a few weeks so we are also trying to finish them. Over the last couple of weeks we have increasingly been having problems with honey bees in...

    Quality feed and finishing?

Hi all, My wife's brother and father have been raising and selling beef cattle for many years. From a taste perspective their beef has always been okay, not great, not bad. Last year we embarked on our first year of raising and selling our own beef. We bought 2 yearlings that arrived in...

    Grass seed drill without discing?

Hi all, I live in sand and already struggle with healthy pasture grass, but then we had a terrible draught for most of the summer. The pasture thinned out and weeds set in. Our beef cattle go off in a couple of weeks. Once they are gone I will be spaying for weeds and I'd like to put down...

New behavior today, heifer bellowing constantly

Hi all, We have had 2 beef cattle since April. We are new to cattle and are still learning. This morning at around 4:45am one of our heifers started bellowing consistently, about every minute or two. We thought something might be wrong so we went out early and checked on them. She seems...

Sales tax exempt number in MN?

Hello there, We have been growing field grasses for several years and just last fall completed fencing a pasture. We had 2 heifers arrive just a little over a week ago. When we go to co-op or farm supply to by seed or feed they always ask us if it is purchased for a farm and want our number...

Can I legally own a Dairy cow????

Check with your city, not just your county. I have 14 acres and my neighbors around me all have 20 acres or more. However, we are all in an area that is zoned Rural Residential, as opposed to just Rural. I had to go to my city and get an Interim Use Permit (IUP) in order to have farm animals...

Beef cow newbie - don't know what I don't know!

At risk of asking a dumb question, when do you go to "finishing?" We will have them approximately 6 months.
