need to make up a bottle for tonight

Give her a little squeeze between her back toe. Any response? I wouldn’t move her for a couple days. She may get worse before she starts improving. Is she eliminating?

    Missing calf??

Have your vet show you how to give fluids. It’s saved quite a few critters at my place. Easy to do, especially if they are really down! Ivermectin on the skin will help with maggots. Make sure you scrape off all of the eggs too. Glad you found him!!

    Sick bottle calf

Thanks! - he's been ok for a few days now. And we switched to bucket feeding...

    Sick bottle calf

I gave him one tsp of Pepto in his evening bottle last night. THis morning his poo was the color & consistancy of soft chocolate pudding. I know the pepto will make it darker....but it was still pretty soft. But at least not pure liquid. So give him another dose? My vet is not too...

    Sick bottle calf

His coat is still sleek & shiny. His appetite is great, bright eyed, ears up, greeting me mooing. I haven't tried the pepto yet - I did read that you don't want to stiffen them up too much. Would they get an adult-human size dose? I know with goat kids (have those, too), you can damage...

    Sick bottle calf

I'm at work now, so don't have the tag with me. But I know it's 20% protein, 20% fat, and all milk protiens, no soy at all. It's still water this morning. He had a few "tighter" ones, but it goes right back to water.

    Sick bottle calf

I've been using the premium replacer from TSC. It's the only kind you can find around here reliably. I've been mixing the 8 oz. to 2 quarts & then dividing it up between the 3 of them (I mix up two batches). I do have Calf Medic, also. I haven't used it yet. Didn't want to give antibiotics...

    Sick bottle calf

I've been bottle feeding a group a 3 holstein bull calves for 2 weeks. After a short bout of scouring, most likely due to over feeding....Everyone was doing fine. When they were scouring, I cut back on the MR and supplemented electroytes in between feedings. No one ever looked ill - just the...

    Another calf question

In my neck of the woods, it used to be common place to buy any breed calf to bottle raise, beef or dairy. Lots of small, family type farms, who would gladly help you out. How does anyone start? You have to start somewhere with cattle. We just want to safely start our son. Not some 6 month...

    Another calf question

Well, we've been looking since March this year for a calf!! This is what we've found: 1. A 3 year old Black Angus cow, bred for 2007 - $1,000 (she was quite skinny for an angus) 2. 3 month old Black Angus heifer - $350 3. 2.5 month old Hereford/WhitePark - $300 (the one we...

    Another calf question

We are looking at a 2 month hereford calf. She's on her mom, but the size of a newborn. Mom never has much milk. We ideally wanted a bottle calf (since our son will be doing this for the first time). Would you or could you bucket feed this baby milk replacer? She is really tiny, like I...

    Quick question

This happened 10 years ago, but bear with me & tell me what you think.... We had 2 holestein steers about 7-8 months old. Both on the same pasture, grain (16% dairy), and hay (regular grass hay). Both were cauterized when newborns with caustic paste on the horn buds. Ok, one starts walking...

    Weaning & Aggressiveness question

I know, I know. :) I keep thinking, why didn't I just go right up & grab that darn rope?! Honestly, this guy was a little scary!! I'm pretty short, right around 5 ft, and he would've been gut level, had he decided to plow into me. I really didn't want to find out! I just...
