I haven't been on this website for years. I just sat down with my 11 year old son and told him about this incredible thread. I was so happy when I read there's a book out. I just ordered it.
Warmer here in Iowa as well. I've been calving since February. My stress level is so much lower now that it has warmed up. I think next year I'll start my main herd the 1st of March.
I can calve in the cold. In fact I'm sure I'll have some born tonight and it is suppose to be around -10 below. I have calving pens. Tonight I'll have about 15 hd. locked up. What I absolutely hate is those cows that slip by you. They don't spring up or show much of an udder and have...
I have a fall herd as well. Yes I love it.
Moving the calving date later will give me lighter calves in the fall however I'll just plan on market them a month or so later so hopefully I won't lose much on the selling weight.
Just wondering when people here calve. I'm in Iowa, normally I calve in February. This year with the cold it is kicking me in the butt! I'm thinking serious of going to March 15.
Years ago we had quite a scour problem. Seemed like we get e-coli taken care of then comes roto-virus then...
I think some people here are getting too hung up on "Breed" and not bloodline. There are tremendous bloodlines in all the breeds as are there poor ones. Do what makes sense for your operation to make $$$.
I recall a few years back having a Hereford bull that I crossed with purebred angus cows...
I just bought a three year old Black Herford. Wasn't looking for one but had a guy wanting to sell his bull. This particular bull has nice eye appeal. Good disposition, easy keeper with nice length. I agree with Dun...its a black white face.
I see something missing here. I understand it was not listed in the original criteria but shouldn't frame size be included. Particular because there is such a difference even within given breed. When one states a Simm-angus cow as a maternal choice. What is the frame size and more important...
I disagree with the fertility issue. Particularly with 1st. calf Heifers. If fertility was an issue why don't I have one with my fall herd. Sure there are a few every year as there is in every herd. Most of my culling stem from age. A lactating Cow does not hold up well during the winter...
The guy is getting rid of the girls cause he runs just a spring herd. Most people here do and don't like messing with fall calves. I've been running both a spring and fall herd for some time. I get along fine. Just have to remember a few things. Creep those calve in the winter. Provide a...
I was thinking around $1500 for a 1st tri cow. Depending on the wt. and sex of the calves I was thinking 6-800 for the calves. That's around $2200. I guess supply is another factor. I have not bought anything since last spring.
