    Thoughts on this bull

CAB is a real premium. Packers will bid more, or the grid will pay more. Most black animals will be sold as angus at the counter regardless of thier quality, they don’t even have to fulfill CAB requirements for packers to put an angus label on them, it just won’t be a CAB label.

    Thoughts on this bull

His chest is too shallow, he is beer gutted which is not good for covering cows. Also well muscled animals should have better gut retention. He is sway backed, and his hip looks short. Lots of red flags for trying to make cows. The best cow makers are flat topped deep chested, and have a long...

    Starting A Program

I’m just thinking he is going to have a hard time of putting together enough older cows that meet his initial criteria. I would really just look at production records and feet, udders, and dispositions on the first cows and not even look at epds.

    Starting A Program

It is very easy to get kicked out of the certified angus beef program with too big of ribeye. Quality grade without excessive back fat is where the money is on the grid. Starting with old cows is definitely the way to go. They will actually have lower fall out rates than heifers in most cases. I...

Cattle people/ farmers are getting old.

I’m in Iowa land is mostly between 7-14k an acre in my area, but there are areas that can’t be farmed. In addition to that there are plenty of cornstalks to feed and graze in the winter. There is also access to distillers grains and other byproducts. You just have to figure out how to structure...

Cattle people/ farmers are getting old.

I think in agriculture, you either pick the area or the opportunity. I think if you are knowledgeable enough most places there is an opportunity to be had, but it may not be what you want to do. On the cattle side many of the chances for young people to find their niche start with knowledge of...

    Snorty Heifer

I had a mustang that was a cat killing machine. He would chase and stomp them.

    Snorty Heifer

Cows have a general dislike for dogs, it’s very similar to horses and cats. You shouldn’t really have the dog out around the cattle. Be ready for her to be mean when she calves, keep your kids away.

    Finishing ration?

I would look at “Nutrient Requirements of Beef Cattle” E-974 . It tells you how many mcal neg / protein you need. You need to know how much energy your 14% feed has. It should work for finishing eventually, and the publication I mentioned will help you know how to scale corn up in your ration...

    Angus BW conversion to pounds

He’s unproven, very unproven if you look at the accuracies. I doubt the bull has an actual birth weight, weaning weight, or yearling weight turned in on him. If his CED and BW verified I would feel fine with him on heifers. Angus are a calving ease breed, but unproven bulls are just that when it...

    Angus BW conversion to pounds

What would be more useful to look at is CED(calving ease direct), as 1.5 pounds heavier than the average really doesn’t matter, what really matter is calf shape and how many large calves (weigh distribution of calves) you get which should be better reflected by CED.

    Creep Feeding

Useing creep as a tool leading to early weaning should work well as a drought strategy. Calves are typically much more efficient on a tmr than creep. Lactating cows use a lot of energy producing milk. In good body condition cows use a lot less energy. So if you can keep your cows in good rig...

Using old semen can be fun but.....

I have only used Franchester for older Wye genetics, he seems to breed like a 6.3 ish frame bull. The bulls I use out of him are 6 frame and 6.8 frame.

Using old semen can be fun but.....

I’m currently running three bulls out of 70’s bulls. This one 18755220 is making as good of daughters as I have seen. The other two sires out of Franchester of Wye are making nice cattle as well. I think the angus breed over looked some genetics in the past when the frame race took off.

Using old semen can be fun but.....

I agree with that; I was not trying to imply that redgully did anything wrong.
